The Appeal

If there is one car that truly epitomises the great American road trip, it has to be the Mustang.

More specifically, the convertible.

The thought of racing across the endless horizon-chasing roads of the deep south, roof down and V8 burbling away, is as evocative as motoring gets.
This example of the ‘small block’ V8 convertible Mustang is finished in a very attractive specification and has a wonderful history.

A winner of many shows, it presents in excellent condition and benefits from genuine low mileage and years of careful and meticulous ownership.

If you’ve always wanted to experience the thrill of the open road in a proper pony car, this has to be worthy of your consideration.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 8 March 1967
  • Bought new by a gentleman in Colorado, who then sold it to his son
  • It was later purchased by a man in Kansas City, who had the car comprehensively restored (a letter in the file outlines the work undertaken)
  • Imported to the UK in 1993 by the current owner
  • Dry stored and never run in the rain
  • Historic vehicle status: MOT and road tax exempt
  • Just 50,507 miles indicated
  • Passed every MOT first time from 2011 to 2017 – only covered about 300 since 2017
  • Vendor tells us this is a full matching numbers vehicle
  • Winner of numerous shows, comes with a collection of trophies
  • Extensive history file includes: Current V5C, US Title, maintenance and servicing invoices, all MOT certificates to 2017, owner’s club valuation, a number of manuals, original owner’s handbooks, two sets of keys
  • Comes with a Mustang branded jacket
  • Indoor dust/storage cover included
  • Genuine car presented in factory specification, not modified
  • Complete with a number of spares

The Interior

  • Black vinyl upholstery (retrimmed during restoration)
  • Period ‘push-button’ radio
  • Original style lap-belts
A true four-seater, the cabin of the Mustang is genuinely practical, as well as being awash with 60s charm and smart period detailing.

There’s lots of brightwork, which looks to be in nice original condition, while the analogue clocks and switchgear are very attractively styled.
During the restoration the interior was retrimmed, as a result the vinyl of the seats and door cards present in excellent condition with only minor signs of use and wear.

Similarly, the black carpets and matching Mustang branded overmats appear to be in fine condition.
The dash itself is the typical combination of black plastics and brightwork, typical of the period. The deep-dish steering wheel and polished metal gear-shifter are in fine fettle with a nice, natural patina.

All of the switchgear and instruments look well, with the only issue we could see being a small crack in the plastic trim to the right hand side of the instrument binnacle.
As with all Mustangs, the boot is very accommodating, trimmed in a checker pattern material with a matching cover for the new spare wheel. The toolkit and jack are also present and correct.

The Exterior

  • Candy Apple Red paintwork
  • Dust/storage cover
  • Original chrome wheel trims
Finished in classic Candy Apple Red, the perfect colour for a muscle car, with a contrasting black fabric roof and plenty of fine brightwork, this Mustang is a very handsome machine.
The paintwork itself appears to be in good order, with no notable damage or marks we could identity and a healthy shine.

Of course, there will be the odd minor blemish or stone chip, but we certainly could not see anything that would concern us.
Similarly, the bodywork appears to be in fine fettle, with crisp lines and nice panel gaps. We couldn’t see any evidence of dents, repairs or corrosion.

Any work that has been carried out on the bodyshell has clearly been completed to a very high standard.

A black fabric roof tops the car, and presents in excellent condition, with no signs of UV damage, tears or significant wear apparent.
The wheels are the standard steel items, with polished chrome wheel covers. The covers themselves look very well, with only minor blemishes, while the wheels are shod with white striped tyres that appear to be in nice condition with good levels of tread.
Having been garaged and only taken out in dry weather, it’s no surprise that the underside of the car looks so good.

With only a few areas of light surface corrosion on some drivetrain components, overall it appears to be in excellent condition – straight and clean with nothing that raises any concerns.

The Mechanics

  • 4,736cc (289ci) Windsor V8
  • 3-speed automatic transmission
  • Fine maintenance record
That hefty V8 is an alluring piece of machinery.

Offering the kind of soundtrack that a muscle car should have, with plenty of power and torque for easy cruising, it’s the perfect companion for the laid-back character of the Mustang convertible.

It looks to be in superb condition here, benefiting from very low miles and clearly having been well cared for.

Alongside the maintenance record, the engine bay presents extremely well, being very clean and tidy with no signs we could see of any mechanical issues.
In 2017, about when the car was last put through an MOT, the owner had new plugs, points, rotor arm, distributor cap and upper ball joints fitted. Since then it has only covered about 300 miles.
We’re informed by the vendor that the car runs very well, with good performance from the engine and brakes, and smooth shifts from that automatic transmission.

Summary

A classic Mustang is one of those cars that most car enthusiasts would love to have in their garage at some point.

When you consider how handsome, capable and characterful they are, that’s no surprise.
This show-winning example has been lovingly cared for since its restoration and still presents in superb condition.

With low mileage and a fine record too, we think this would be the perfect classic for next year’s show season.

Or simply to tuck away and enjoy on summer days.

Either way, it’ll be a whole heap of fun.
