1966 Triumph TR4A IRS

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Fully restored example
  • Stunning condition throughout
  • Photographic record of rebuild
  • Beautiful inside and out

THE APPEAL

Launched in 1964, the Triumph TR4A IRS looked broadly similar to its TR4 predecessor but was actually quite a different car. Bigger and wider, its most significant evolution from the older model was its wholly independent rear suspension, with semi-trailing arms and coil springs as per the Triumph 2000 saloon, rather than the live rear axle set-up seen on earlier cars. The changes transformed the car and made it much more sure-footed and agile sports car than any of the previous TRs, which makes a TR4A an especially sought-after model.
This one is an original right-hand-drive UK car, adding further to its appeal, and was restored between 2013 and 2015 by a retired mechanical engineer in Scotland. It has been owned and loved by the vendor since it was completed, but a hip replacement means he now has to sadly say goodbye to the car he dreamed of owning since he was a teenager.
It was a fundamentally sound car to start with, but was stripped, structurally repaired and professionally painted during its restoration, as well as being completely retrimmed inside.

THE HISTORY AND PAPERWORK

  • Full photo record of restoration supplied on USB
  • Lots of more recent invoices
  • UK V5C
  • Tax and MOT exempt
  • Old MOT certificates and tax discs
  • TR4A Owners’ Handbook
  • Documented record of build
  • Substantial pile of invoices for parts bought during restoration

THE INTERIOR

  • Fully retrimmed in red leather
  • Wood veneer dash
  • Three-spoke steering wheel
  • New carpets and door cards during rebuild

Inside, the TR4A has been comprehensively refurbished with immaculate red leather seats, along with an aftermarket veneer-finish dashboard, new carpets and door cards, all of which are in superb condition with no notable faults.
The fabric roof is in good order and it also comes with a pop-on tonneau cover. A three-spoke sports  steering wheel sets things off beautifully.

THE EXTERIOR

  • Signal Red
  • Restored and repainted
  • Excellent order
  • Superb hood

Finished in Signal Red with wire wheels, the TR4A looks absolutely fantastic and sits really well on the road.
The restoration is a few years old but it still looks amazing, having been carried out to an exceptional standard, and the car carefully looked after and garaged since. The paint is pretty much flawless, the only very slight damage being a small chip on the inner door shut where the vendor trapped something in the door. It’s not visible from outside the car.
The chrome and trim are in superb order and the underside is in fine condition. The body was removed from the car during its restoration and any structural repairs carried out to a high standard, while the wings and bonnet were renewed.
This is a stunning example – of that, make no mistake.

THE MECHANICS

  • 2,138cc OHV 4cyl
  • Four-speed manual with overdrive
  • Overhauled during restoration
  • Runs well with no known issues

Under the bonnet, you'll find Triumph's familiar four-cylinder petrol engine, derived from that of the Standard Vanguard. It’s a very simple unit and is extremely easy to maintain, whilst in the lightweight TR4A body it provides a perfectly decent turn of performance. It’s an engine renowned for its reliability, too.
The vendor says that the car is excellent to drive with no issues at all affecting the engine, drivetrain, steering or suspension.
It has a fully functional overdrive, and was comprehensively overhauled during the car’s restoration.

SUMMARY

This is a truly wonderful example of what is one of the most desirable classic Triumphs of the 1960s, the IRS being the most sought after TR4 and also one of the most desired TR models altogether.
As an original RHD UK car, it also has added provenance. It’s a great-looking car and would be an ideal basis for a car to take on the concours circuit, as it really is that good.
