The Appeal
Fewer than one thousand Mistrals were produced by Maserati between 1963 and 1970, making it a rare beast even when new. This is a shame because the world could always do with a few more cars as beautiful as the Mistral. But this rarity only makes it more alluring today.
Presented in very useable condition, with a beautifully retrimmed interior in red leather and lustrous silver paintwork, this Maserati is a fine example of a grand tourer.
Invoices accompany the car, setting out the maintenance work it has received in recent years. Such a rare car would be an excellent choice to exhibit at a wide variety of shows or simply to be enjoyed on the open road.
The History and Paperwork

The Interior

- Clean and tidy throughout
Opening the door and stepping in to the sumptuous cabin of this Maserati mistral is like stepping back in time to the 1960s. The interior of this Coupé is in such excellent condition that you could be forgiven for thinking that you are driving a modern car.
The red leather upholstery on the seats, door cards and centre console is beautifully crafted and in almost unused condition. It appears that only the finest hides have been selected for use in this Maserati. And the matching red carpets are clean, tidy and well fitted.
In front of the driver is a beautiful wooden rimmed steering wheel and a tastefully appointed dashboard, with Smiths gauges alongside chromed controls for the ventilation and electrical components.
The beautifully stitched headlining is in excellent condition, with no rips or stains apparent. And to the rear, the load area is exceptionally tidy.
The Exterior
- Silver paintwork in beautiful condition
- Borrani wire wheels
- Underneath appears clean and tidy
With its styling by Pietro Frua, the Mistral exemplifies the suave lines of ‘60s Italian design. It is subtle and understated, yet effortlessly beautiful.
This Maserati is presented in beautiful condition, with its paintwork exhibiting a deep lustre throughout. A change of colour, from white to silver, is recorded as having happened in 2013 so it seems that the current paint was probably applied within the past ten years.
The car sits on chrome plated Borrani wire wheels and the tyres are said to retain good tread. Overall, the exterior chrome is showing some signs of pitting but the stunning styling more than makes up for this. Crucially, the bold chrome bumpers appear to be excellent.
Underneath, the vendor states that the car is in excellent condition and it certainly appears to be very presentable.
The Mechanics
- 3.7-litre straight-six engine
- 245 bhp when new
- Ignition service in 2019 and major service in 2017
The 3.7 litre straight-six engine is rated at 245 bhp, which was a very commendable output figure in the mid-sixties, and gave a top speed of over 140 mph.
Mechanically, the Mistral was an advanced car for the 1960s. It came with Lucas fuel injection, four wheel disc brakes and a five-speed transmission.
This Mistral’s engine bay appears to be very clean and the car has benefitted from having oil leaks professionally investigated and remedied. The car received a service to its ignition system in 2019 and extensive tuning work in 2017. A sizeable folder of invoices details the expenditure invested in this Maserati in recent years.
Summary
There is something especially alluring about this Maserati Mistral: the combination of its rarity, high performance and beautiful styling make this a particularly tempting proposition.
It has clearly been well looked after in recent years and will make an exceptional addition to any garage. It will no doubt be very welcome at many prestigious events internationally.
