The Background

This is a car that seriously needs no introduction. The mustang is among the most iconic American muscle cars of all time, and 1966 is the most popular model year, for good reason… Just look at it!
Ford began the production of the mustang back in 1964, however in 1966 that’s when people really began to associate it with power and performance. It really was the perfect, stylish all-rounder that people lusted after. Need a daily driver? Mustang. Needed a weekend cruiser? Mustang. Simply wanted a stylish car to make yourself look good and enjoy driving it in the process? You guessed it…. Mustang!
In 1966 the Mustang models featured revised parts such as; redesigned wheels, new grille pattern, new instrument cluster, new rocker-panel trim and redesigned side scoops. If you want a coupe, this is the year to get.

The History

This beautiful 1966 Mustang was originally manufactured in San Jose in California, and actually spent its entire life there up until 2018. Due to California being a dry state, this mustang was in great shape upon importing it over to the UK. The engine was built in the USA before import, the date for this however is unknown as the USA owners never did keep a great history for the vehicle.
The current owner has owned the car for the last 3 years, originally purchased for the price of $18,000 and during his time with it he has spent in excess of £32,000 getting the car to the glorious position it is in now. A grand total of over £45,000 went into the vehicle! The restoration started almost immediately after it landed in the UK.

During the 2 and a half years worth of restoration the car had an incredible amount of work done. The entire interior has been completely overhauled with new parts with superior detail and no regard for expense. Pony interior was used rather than the base interior, and while this was being done the owner also got new foam padding for the seats as well as new springs, even went as far as pulling out the seat supports to paint them and protect them.
The paint job was done in 2020 in Scotland and cost the owner in excess of £4,500 to be done professionally, money well spent, we think. Iconic Eleanor Pepper Grey Metallic really sets this car off. After the paint job was completed and all the finishing touches had been done, the car sat in dry storage until recently, meaning this car has done almost no mileage since the time of rebuild, everything is still in excellent condition as it should be.

What this means is that the car has never been subject to the gloomy Scottish weather and always been hidden away from any rain or snow.

The Paperwork

The owner tells us a lot of paperwork was lost in transportation of the car, so tracing the cars history in the states becomes somewhat difficult to do. We are told however there are 2 previous owners from the United States before the car was exported to the UK.
The owner does have the correct registration paperwork from the DVLA and the car is UK registered with a V5 and the registration number KKH 702D.

The Interior

Classically luxurious, high end Pony interior. There has been no expense spared throughout this car and the interior is absolutely no exception. Everything you can lay your eyes on the inside of this ‘66 coupe is brand new, from the pony seats, headliner, dials and gauges, switches and even down to the seat belts and the speakers mounted behind the rear seats.. Everything is in outstanding condition. There has been meticulous attention to detail throughout the process of building this car and it really does shine through, inside and out.
New floor carpets were installed in the vehicle and all Pony seats front and back received new foam, new springs and painted supports to protect them in the long run. Due to how expensive these interiors are, the owner saw fit to go through any trouble necessary to preserve it for as long as possible, and we don’t blame him at all. A new Pioneer stereo was installed to the vehicle along with new heater cores, a new heater control panel, new glovebox, brand new foot pedals, new ignition barrel and an entirely new dashboard which received 4 coats of paint.
During the restoration process, the car was outfitted with new sound dampening materials to help reduce unwanted road noise and keep the cabin noise to a desirable level. New Cobra floor mats were sourced, new sun visors, dashboard, window cranks, door panels, kick plates and a gorgeous Cobra wooden steering wheel that reminds you that you’re driving something special. The vast list of new parts outfitted here truly is astounding, so much so that we would never be able to list them all! This has to be seen to be appreciated just how many new components have been used throughout.
All of the parts included in this interior were sourced through CJ Pony with Scott Drake parts, which are the world's largest manufacturer and supplier of reproduction parts for classic Fords and Mustangs - these parts are the absolute best when it comes to high end restorations such as this.
You would be fooled into believing that this car just rolled out of the San Jose production plant that the car was originally manufactured in. There is very little in this vehicle that hasn’t been restored, the interior we are told is at very minimum a 95% restoration.

The Exterior

Exquisite. Simply put, this Mustang will sweep you right off your feet and take you back to the 60’s the moment you lay your eyes on it. Very nearly everything on this car is brand new, detailed in the parts list the owner has given us, it's seemingly impossible to find any flaws here. Even up close, this car left our jaws swinging.
The bodywork is beautifully straight with no signs of damage, and any rust was taken care of at the time of the restoration process. The chrome work surrounding the windows is also in good condition. Looking at this car feels more like standing in a museum admiring an exhibition rather than looking at a car in the street.
During the restoration process, the owner had a plethora of new parts ordered for the car. This list is far too big to condense into this advert, however we’d be wrong if we didn’t give you a small taste of the work done on this piece of automotive jewellery.
- New window seals all round
- New windscreen and rear glass
- New door mirrors and handles
- New antenna
- New headlights and surrounds, as well as indicator lenses, surrounds and hardware
- New front and rear chrome bumpers
- New GT350 hood scoop
- New front grill
- New Eleanor wheels
- New Cobra fuel cap
- New wiper motors, blades and arms
- New wing mirrors
- New gear shifter and panel
And LOADS more!
The vehicle also sports a breathtaking Eleanor Pepper Grey Metallic full body paint job which was recently professionally completed, we think it compliments the lines of the coupe beautifully. There are VERY minor exterior paint issues that may need a little attention due to the car sitting in storage, however this shouldn’t put you off in the slightest - this car is a piece of artwork.  A GT350 hood scoop has been incorporated to help feed that hungry 302 block. A wonderfully subtle addition that fits incredibly well.
This pony car is an absolute head turner, wherever she goes.

The Mechanics

This car wants for nothing - it absolutely is a turn-key car. Get in and drive. Originally being a 200ci 6 cylinder car when it was manufactured in San Jose, it underwent a 302 5.0L V8 engine transplant which was rebuilt and compression tested during the restoration process, ensuring the car would be as healthy as possible, along with this a plethora of new ancillaries were installed which include:
- New alternator, starter and water pump
- New XL radiator
- New rocker cover and valve covers
- New ignition coil
- New distributor
- New fuel pump
- New hoses all round
- Monte carlo roll bars
- Chrome strut mountings
- New battery and battery tray
And more.
The owner has completely serviced the car with brand new and OEM parts and fluids, including engine fluid and filter, gearbox fluid, rear differential fluid, new spark plugs and ignition leads, new air filter etc. Brand new Toyo Proxes T1 Sports tyres were fitted all round, staggered with 225/45/17 on the front and 245/40/17 on the rear axle.
As well as a complete engine overhaul, a large amount of the mechanical components were replaced along with the hardware being extensively renewed. Brand new front and rear KYB sports suspension, heavy duty upper and lower control arms, tie rods, links, springs and perches, brand new exhaust and chrome tips and a new power steering system. Willwood cross drilled, slotted and vented performance discs and 4-piston calipers were installed to the vehicle to help aid stopping power, as well as new stainless steel braided brake lines and new brake pipes to keep the brake pedal stiff and linear. This is a well deserved brake upgrade with that massive engine propelling such a light car! The owner also fitted the vehicle with a battery isolation switch which is a must-have for any car sitting in long-term storage.
The gearbox is a standard 3-speed automatic transmission branded “Cruise-O-Matic” which came with most 1966 Mustangs. Only the High Performance models received the option to go for the likes of a 4-speed manual, which is incredibly hard to find.
It’s safe to say, this car has been pampered beyond belief, a lot of time, money and devotion has been put into both the bodywork and the mechanical side of things.

The Appeal

This is a very rare opportunity to become the owner of one of the best pony cars available from the 60’s. Riddled with class, beauty and power, it’s not difficult to see why these models were so popular back in their heyday. This vehicle allows you to forget about the maintenance and upkeep side of things and simply enjoy what a wonderful car it is. This may be the closest to a fully concourse condition car you will find for the price and specification.
We can picture it already. Summer nights, windows down, with that beautiful V8 symphony playing to the command of your right foot. There isn’t much out there that can put a smile on your face much like this can.
