1966 Ford F100 Pickup V8

Highlights

  • Beautifully restored on a Crown Victoria running gear
  • Very rare factory right hand drive example with big capacity V8 power
  • Native of the dry and arid climate of South Africa to the benefit of its condition

The Appeal

The Ford F-Series is a line of rugged, light and medium duty trucks which started production as far back as 1948. Such is the popularity and utility of the F-Series that it has been produced over fourteen generations between 1948 and the present day. The F100 presented here is a fourth-generation model from 1966 and built by Ford of South Africa.

Our example looks more contemporary thanks to a high-quality restoration, bright colourway and big, chunky alloy wheels. This is a rare right hand drive example, as produced in 1966, with big V8 power and an automatic gearbox. It is mechanically well sorted and ready now for the 2023 show season.

The History and Paperwork

  • This F100 pickup rolled out of the Port Elizabeth factory in 1966
  • The pickup spent its entire life in the dry, arid climate of South Africa until 2022
  • In June 2022, the current owner imported the pickup to the UK
  • The Nova document is dated 22/06/22
  • The pickup was first registered here in October 2022
  • The current V5 is present in the name of the first and only UK keeper
  • The pickup is registered as a Historic Vehicle
  • This means the vehicle is MoT and VED exempt in the UK
  • HMRC paperwork relating to the import is also on hand

The Interior

  • Our example features a nicely trimmed and unique interior
  • The cab is fitted with a full width bench seat
  • This bench has been retrimmed in black vinyl
  • This is arranged into vertical box pleats with a perforated finish
  • The retrimmed seat is in a first-class condition
  • The cabin floor is fully trimmed in fitted black carpet
  • These appear in an excellent condition throughout

  • This is complete with a ribbed alloy panel to the instrument binnacle
  • The binnacle consists of a large speedometer calibrated in miles per hour
  • Supplemental gauges are present for fuel level and water temperature
  • A unique, three spoke alloy steering wheel is fitted
  • This features a thick wooden rim and an intricately engraved design to the spokes
  • Behind the wheel is the column mounted selector for the automatic gearbox
  • The passenger side of the dashboard features a metal lidded glove box
  • In the glovebox a modern Sony CD player is fitted complete with AUX input
  • A water temperature gauge is fitted in the centre console
  • The door cards are finished in bright, body coloured steel
  • The headlining is well fitted and consists of dark-coloured perforated vinyl
  • The generous load bay appears to be in fine, overall condition
  • It is remarkably damage free and straight and true for this type of vehicle
  • It is finished in textured protective paint in matt black
  • A full-sized, alloy spare wheel is mounted to the cab’s rear bulkhead

The Exterior

  • The pickup looks fantastic in its bright red metallic paintwork
  • The paintwork exudes a deep and lustrous shine throughout
  • Large, tubular side bars are mounted at the sills and finished in silver
  • The bodywork also appears to be straight and solid condition throughout
  • There are a couple of minor imperfection here and there
  • These includes some paint cracking on the bonnet and a scuff mark to a side bar
  • The pickup sits on chunky looking wheels and tyres
  • These wheels are 16 inch, five soke alloy examples in a fine condition
  • The tyres are a matching set of General Grabber Ats with side wall script
  • These appear to be in a good condition and are in a 245/70 configuration
  • Original “Ford 100” emblems are affixed to the wings
  • A tow hitch with single electrics is fitted
  • This sits between the twin chromed tail pipes
  • An oversized “Ford” is embossed into the tail gate
  • The bonnet has been converted to hinge forward
  • This all combines to give the pickup real head-turning road presence

The Mechanics

  • Our example is understood to have been restored on a Crown Victoria chassis
  • This includes the V8 engine, gearbox, brakes and drivetrain
  • The engine is the 4.6L V8 Ford modular power unit
  • Originally this unit was rated at around 220bhp 272 Ib-ft of torque
  • Power is fed to the wheel wheels via a three-speed automatic gearbox
  • The pickup has been fitted with a brand-new battery
  • An antifreeze service has been undertaken
  • The truck is reported to run very well with no known issues
  • The big V8 sounds spectacular rumbling through the twin tailpipes
  • The owner reports that some attention is required to the door locks
  • The under-bonnet presentation is very sound and clean
  • The underside of the pickup appears very well presented too for its age

Summary

Big Ford pickups enjoy an enthusiastic following the world over. They are proven for their longevity and rugged utility. The big V8 powered versions are most sought after for their lazy power delivery and sublime rumbling soundtrack. Examples imported from dry, salt-free geographies are particularly sought-after as it helps keep the dreaded rust at bay.

This example is a real gem. Importantly, it is a factory right hand drive F100, courtesy of South Africa’s Port Elizabeth factory. The truck has spent its life until 2022 in South Africa. The condition of the trucks bodywork and underside is a testament to the benefits of that background. Our example has been fastidiously restored with very little left to do. This is an example that is bound to turn heads and initiate conversations in equal measure. Bid today to avoid missing out on this rare opportunity.
