1965 Lancia Flaminia 2.8 3C GTL Superleggera

Highlights

• A completely rebuilt example of the rarest iteration of the Lancia Flaminia GT
 • A classic 1960’s GT car of the highest quality with the sublime Superleggera aluminium body by Touring of Milan
 • In pristine condition, both aesthetically and mechanically, this car was judged as a top ten “Best in Show” car at 2017’s Goodwood Revival by Sir Stirling Moss

The Appeal

That this Lancia Flaminia is a beautiful car is blatantly obvious to anyone who sees it. What is less obvious from photographs alone is the very solid engineering that underpins this aluminium GT icon. It provides an object lesson in form and function coming together to create something that is more than the sum of its parts.
This example has been exquisitely restored in its previous ownership and every facet of the car seems to have been attended to. Sir Stirling Moss knew his 60’s GT’s so for him to judge this so highly at 2017’s Goodwood Revival would be with good reason.
The rarity of this car is astounding too. With only 300 originally built in the 1960’s, the numbers surviving today will be miniscule in automotive terms. That rarity combined with the perennial popularity of Touring of Milan creations, and you have a car which can only continue to soar in value and appeal.

The History and Paperwork

 • Built in 1965, the final year of production of the GTL
 • One of only 300 of this particular model built
 • Underwent an extensive and expert restoration in Mexico in 2010
 • Bought to the UK and registered here in May 2015
 • Bought by the current keeper from classic specialists, Pendine, in 2017
 • The car boasts an extensive history file containing many interesting documents
 • These include the original owner’s handbook
 • The Maryland Certificate of Title from 2004
 • DVLA documentation from the UK registration process
 • A Goodwood Revival “Best in Show” certificate for the car
 • The current V5 in the name of the current owner
 • A high-quality, notated, photographic record of the fastidious restoration
 • Numerous invoices covering parts and schedules of work from a number of specialists providers
 • Documentary evidence of the large amounts of money expended to bring this car to the standard you see today

The Interior

 • A beautifully restored “tobacco” leather trimmed interior
 • An interior that successfully combines a period-correct ambiance with an almost “factory-fresh” condition
 • The commodious front seats are dressed in box pleated leather and asymmetrically fold for access to the rear seats
 • The rear seats are also in excellent condition if best suited for additional luggage, hats, or coats rather than passengers
 • The dashboard is dominated by a large pair of multifunction Jaeger gauges
 • The three-spoke, wooden rimmed steering wheel is large and tactile and compliments the GT car ambiance perfectly
 • A period correct Voxson Sebring radio is in place in the centre of the dash
 • The carpets are in a complimentary brown wool and are protected by heavy duty carpet mats
 • The headlining and door cards also present very well indeed combining to make this a memorable and exceptional GT cabin
The large dials, painted, body-coloured dash front and large, wood rimmed wheel all contribute to the 1960’s time-warp ambiance of the cabin. It’s in excellent, restored condition and is as comfortable as it is well appointed. From here it is easy to imagine yourself cruising down the road between Rome and Ariminum that the car takes its name from – the Flaminia. Windows down, the V6 2.8L engine purring away up front and Dean Martin’s “Mambo Italiano” on the radio. Perfect!

The Exterior

 • The aluminium GT Superleggera – or superlight - body, lovingly crafted by Touring of Milan presents in excellent condition
 • Bodywork is straight and true, and all panel gaps are tight and symmetrical
 • Doors, boot and bonnet all open and close faultlessly and there is a very reassuring “thunk” from the closing doors
 • The 2010 restoration has resulted in exquisite paint and bodywork as you will see from our detailed photographic package
 • The steel wheels are capped with the correct, Lancia embossed chrome hub caps
 • The glass, light lenses and chrome work are all in excellent condition
 • The Lancia is adorned with all the original badge work and emblems including the enamelled “Touring Superleggera Milano” boot lid emblem
This is a car that shines from every angle. Every line and curve the product of artists and craftsmen of the highest renown. The sky-blue paintwork complements the car perfectly and the long bonnet and boot emphasise both the performance and GT credentials of this most sophisticated of 1960’s GT cars.

The Mechanics

 • The same attention to detail that exemplifies the rest of this car is evident under the bonnet
 • Powered by a Lancia built 2.8L V6 engine, originally rated at 150bhp
 • Induction is care of triple, twin choke Weber downdraft carburettors
 • Technically advanced for its period the car rides on independent front suspension and a De Dion setup at the rear
 • Braking is via discs all round
 • Reported by the current owner as “driving faultlessly”
The Lancia engineered 2.8L V6 sounds delightfully distinctive and bursts into life easily and eagerly. The steering comes in for particular praise reported to be light and responsive in a typical Lancia way.

Summary

Superleggera cars, a unique technique where aluminium panels are shaped by hand over metal forms, are enjoying great popularity at present. With supply inevitably outstripped by demand this car remains one of very few pristine Superleggera still available for five figures rather than six. Surely a recipe for an excellent investment.
To consider this car as purely an investment, however, would be to unplay the appeal of this piece of automotive art. It’s a delightful car to be around. It looks great and it runs faultlessly. It is ready to be used and enjoyed and represents a very rare opportunity to own such a rare and beautiful Italian masterpiece.
