The Appeal
Few cars have had a cultural impact comparable to that of the Ford Mustang. Revered by many as America’s greatest sports car, the Mustang democratised performance and was once described by TV’s Jeremy Clarkson as the vehicle that “changed the world, mobilised a generation, redirected the way we thought about cars”.
This 1964 example is particularly special and, featuring a 4.7-litre V8 engine and finished in unashamedly ‘60s electric blue paint, it epitomises what the Mustang has always been about. Residing in France, this car has recently had some mechanical work undertaken and is now ready to be used and enjoyed as the Ford Motor Company intended.

The Interior
- Believed to be largely original
- Complements exterior colour scheme
- Very smart overall
Lowering yourself into this Mustang really is like stepping back in time.
The vendor believes the interior to be mostly original. The seats certainly are of the correct factory style and are gently patinated. There were no tears, serious staining or signs of heavy wear we could detect, suggesting that this car has been carefully looked after all of its life.
The dashboard, with its matching vinyl top and wood grain inlays, also looks to be factory correct and is in really nice shape. There are a couple of small nicks and imperfections here and there but none of the usual UV damage we would expect to see on a car of this age. The usual contact points such as the steering wheel, pedals and gear lever have a little wear but are in lovely condition. The gauges read clearly and we understand that everything works as it should. The radio apparently functions but does not pick up French stations. We are told that the windows can be a little stiff to operate.
The carpets are quite well worn in places but are clean, intact and eminently usable, the vendor informs us that the headlining is clean and well supported throughout the cabin. Inside the boot, we can see the spare wheel is in place and the boot lining appears in good order.
The Exterior
- Striking blue paintwork
- Presentable chrome
- Period-correct wheels
The highly original appearance of this Mustang continues on the outside and while we are unsure of this vehicle’s original colour, the metallic electric blue paint and period-correct wheels make this Ford is archetypally ‘60s.
The vendor informs us that the paint is in excellent order and while we’re sure the odd imperfection exists, it certainly looks to be really smart. There are a few blemishes to the chromework and the vendor points out a mark on the front bumper. However, it is very serviceable in its current state, with very minimal pitting or damage.
The wheels really suit the car and look fantastic. The vendor informs us that the tyres are in good order with plenty of tread remaining.
Underneath, everything appears to be free from corrosion, with most componentry painted in black or underseal. The bodywork too seems really straight, with no visible corrosion or evidence of past accident damage.
The Mechanics
- 4.7-litre V8 engine
- Automatic transmission
- Recent expenditure on various mechanicals
The vendor informs us that the V8 engine runs really well, accelerating eagerly with no misfires. Since purchasing the car in 2017, the vendor informs us that they have had the radiator, thermostat, battery, spark plugs, HT leads and starter relay replaced.
We understand that the automatic gearbox operates smoothly and the car stops very well, equipped with front disc brakes.
There are a couple of small oil leaks although these are apparently not excessive. The vendor reports that there are a few squeaks and rattles while driving, including some knocking likely caused by worn suspension componentry at the front end.
Otherwise, this Mustang drives really well and the intoxicating V8 burble is truly addictive.
Summary
As a prime example of one of the most culturally significant cars of all time, this early Mustang deserves to be cherished for years to come.
Having been carefully attended to in the past and by its current owner, this smart example is definitely one to consider bidding on.
