The Appeal

When first setting eyes on this lovely Mustang glinting in the sunlight we are sure we could hear the Beach Boys extolling the virtues of California Girls.  The oh so 1960s colour combination looks just right, and the car just begs to be driven straight to the beach and parked beneath some palm trees!

With Mustangs being such an iconic popular car worldwide and a wide network of bolt on parts, it's quite rare to find an original specification car, especially the one you see here, a genuine, factory built GT example, fitted with the rare factory 'GT Equipment Group' package.

The options were available to dealers from 1966, which could be fitted post build by the dealers, but this example left the factory as a GT.
Delivered new to Dallas, Texas the Mustang spent the next 22 years in the Dallas/Fort Worth area until it was imported into the UK.  With just one owner since its arrival here in 2012 it has been well looked after but driven sparingly in the past 10 years covering just 3,500 miles.
Now being offered as the seller has decided to concentrate on other cars in his collection the Mustang is now being offered in exceptionally nice condition, ready for immediate enjoyment.

The Interior

  • Attractive Blue and White Pony interior
  • Air conditioning
  • Clean and tidy boot
Whoever ordered the Mustang ticked just the right combination of boxes that resulted in a particularly attractive colour combination.  Combined with the white vinyl roof the interior would have been a light but cool place to be in the hot Texas summer. According to the seller the car was equipped from new with air conditioning although there is not documentary evidence to prove this.
The seats are Light Blue Crinkle Vinyl and White Crinkle Vinyl, with the Pony Interior panels featuring galloping mustangs in relief on the seatback panels.  The seats covers look to have been replaced at some stage and are all in good, clean with no rips or marks.  There are lap strap seatbelts for the front seats.

The carpets are a darker shade of blue and are in equally condition, but with a few marks.  Notably n the driver’s foot well adjacent to the air conditioning vents, and a couple of marks on the passenger side foot well.  The seat colours are matched on the door panels that are clean and undamaged. The driver’s door panel features the controls for the adjustable outside door mirror.
The matching blue centre console runs between the front seats finishing in the rear with an ashtray and interior light.  It appears that at some stage in has sustained some damage, with cracks to the plastic beside the driver’s seat and near the gearstick.
The rear shelf and dash top are clean and have no sun damage and the roof lining is clean and well fitted, although there is a small hole in the fabric on the inside of the C pillar on the passenger side.
The dash area is very smart, with wood effect inserts around the instruments and on the glove box door.  This is complemented by the correct 3 spoke wood rimmed steering wheel with horn buttons mounted on the spokes. There is an additional aftermarket, but period Sun Super Tach mounted on the steering column.

This was a normal addition to Mustangs that didn’t have the optional Rally Pac tachometer, as surprisingly there wasn’t one in fitted as standard.
The boot area is clean with no signs of damp, corrosion or damage.  The spare wheel is properly mounted with an older BF Goodrich tyre.  This is concealed beneath a cover that matches the boot lining material.  There is also a matching bag for the jack and tools.
Overall the interior is in good condition and is a bright and appealing space, with a few areas that could be improved.

The Exterior

  • Excellent Silver Blue Metallic paint
  • Excellent chrome
  • Original steel wheels with hubcaps and good tyres
On the outside the Mustang is bright and impressive.  The Silver Blue paint has a good shine and looked fabulous in the bright sunshine on the day of our visit.  We studied the finish closely and could only find a couple areas of damage; one, a chip through the paint to the passenger side front wheel arch, and a couple of small scuff marks just above the driver’s side trim ahead of the rear wheel.  Apart from these small areas the paint is excellent.  Combined with the equally well presented white vinyl roof, the overall look of the exterior is bright, cool and oh so 1960s.
The wheels are the original size 14 inch steel s with the correct for 65 full hubcaps with spinners.  All four have Maxxis tyres fitted in 2017 with plenty of life remaining.
The front bumper and valance were replaced in 2013 after a small bump caused by the failure of the brake master cylinder!  The work was complete to a good standard, paid for by the insurance with invoices on file. And the braking system was rebuilt with a new master cylinder!

The Mechanics

  • Excellent mechanical condition throughout
  • Rebuilt 4 speed manual gearbox
  • Power Steering
The Mustang was in good condition when imported in 2012.  Looking at the photos on the CD from the USA it appears some restoration work was completed before it was imported.  Since it has been a UK resident it has covered less than 3,500 miles, being used only occasionally for trips to shows and Mustang meets, and the odd longer trip now and again.

After the aforementioned bump caused by brake failure the brakes were overhauled, with a new master and slave cylinders, and new hoses.  Being a GT Mustang meant that front disc brakes were standard.  This example was order with the four speed manual gearbox, and this was removed and rebuilt at a cost of £1200 in 2014. Other than that little has required attention apart from regular oil changes and maintenance.

The Mustang is in excellent mechanical condition and drives beautifully according to the seller.  Looking under the car tells us that here some evidence of new bushes plus an aftermarket rear anti roll bar has been fitted.  The sump appears dry with no oil leaks, and the chassis appears to be solid, with areas of original underseal still remaining.

Summary

Real GT Mustangs are pretty rare.  Many that claim to be GTs are just badged up standard cars but if you know where to look for you can find the evidence of a true GT.  This GT had some nice options added when ordered:  A Code 225hp four barrel V8 with 305lb/ft of torque, four speed manual gearbox, power steering and a stunning colour combination.
If you are looking for one of the nicer examples this side of the Atlantic then here it is; you have found it!
