1964 Chrysler 300K

Photos provided by the vendor

Highlights

  • Attractive, rarely-seen piece of American automotive history
  • Part of a static collection since 2012
  • Imported to the UK in 2022 and purchased from auction
  • Now registered in the UK

The Appeal

First introduced in 1955, the Chrysler 300 ‘Letter Series’ were for many years stated to be ‘America’s most powerful car’. These were Chrysler’s star attraction for years. Brutal, powerful motors that carried impressive levels of trim. They certainly weren’t sports cars - no, they were something quite different, and still fairly new to the post-war environment: the muscle car.
By the time this ‘64 300K was built - every production year going up a letter in the alphabet - they’d become a legendary symbol of power and prowess on the road.
This example comes to us in good condition, having been part of a static collection for some 13 years. It’s benefited from constant dry storage and is now ready and waiting to be restored and put back on the road. After all, with that boisterous Golden Lion V8, it’s almost a crime to keep it standing still.

The History and Paperwork

  • First delivered in Brooklyn, New York on 21st July 1964
  • Mileage stamped up to 1968 displaying 40,065 miles
  • The odometer now reads 41,182 miles on a five-figure odometer
  • Due to a lack of service history thereafter, we’re unable to confirm this figure
  • Entered a static collection in 2012
  • Sold at auction in April 2022 and transported by trailer
  • Has been held in dry storage since
  • Car comes with V5c document
  • Proof of import duty payment
  • Vehicle dating certificate from American Auto Club UK
  • New licence plates ready to be installed

The Interior

  • Sharply appointed, no-nonsense interior, in keeping with the car’s muscle car identity
  • Seemingly entirely original with no clear signs of modification
  • Black vinyl seats in excellent order with no rips or tears we can highlight
  • Attractive black dashboard with nicely kept instruments, all of which appear period-accurate
  • Wonderfully tactile switches, dials and original radio system all in situ
  • Dashboard surround has some scratches and wear
  • Distinctive two-spoke steering wheel in good order
  • Carpets are in good order throughout, as is the headlining
  • Door card vinyl and fittings have some marks and wear
  • Door mounted carpets on the driver’s side appear somewhat unravelled
  • We cannot confirm if instruments are working, due to the car’s long career on static display
  • Boot is in excellent order, with good lining
  • Spare wheel, jack and tools
  • Some superficial dusting corrosion underneath the carpets, but this appears to be light

The Exterior

  • Car appears to be in fair order with some minor body issues
  • Paintwork is bright and largely well presented with minor chips to door and lid edging
  • Some scratches to the lower extremities of the car
  • Some wear to the black trim across the car
  • Some bubbling can be seen above the sills
  • Isolated bubbles on the lower doors
  • Some blisters on both sides of the rear wings
  • Headlight lenses in excellent condition with no cracks or fractures
  • The all-important ‘egg-crate’ grille is nicely presented with original Chrysler branding
  • Chromework is largely well presented, with light age-commensurate wear
  • Bumpers in excellent order with no faults
  • Vinyl-covered roof is unmarked, with no bubbling underneath that we can discern
  • Window rubbers appear to have been perished in areas and may need replacement
  • Original Chrysler ‘turbine’ wheels in fair order, though with a loss of some coloured branding
  • Shod in a full set of tyres, that look to be in decent order
  • Underneath, the car appears to be worn only superficially
  • Clearly benefiting from its dry storage, we can’t spot any major corrosion
  • Some light flaking to the underside floor pans

The Mechanics

  • Powered by the throaty 6.8L ‘Wedge-head’ Golden Lion V8 powerplant
  • Impressive 390bhp output
  • 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission
  • Power-assisted brakes and steering, a relatively rare period for the period
  • Car has been a static display vehicle for over 13 years and will require recommissioning

Summary

Ready and waiting to be recommissioned, this highly impressive Chrysler 300K is bound to make an impact on any car collection. These don’t often arrive in UK markets, and this example is amongst the finest restoration candidates we’ve come across.
