The Appeal
The second generation of the Corvette hit in 1963. It was an evolution of the 50s first gen, with a focus on making a smaller, more attractive coupe, and emulating the legendary Sting Ray racer by Bill Mitchell. It was an ambitious project - with a lot of focus on aerodynamics and steel support to provide a tougher, more innovative car compared to its predecessor.
The result was a speedy little motor - light, but well handling with the acclaimed V8 making for a distinctly fun vehicle that, by 1964, was proving intensely popular and increasingly comfortable. It soon became a distinctive piece of American pop culture.
Fitted with the most powerful of the first generation Small-Block V8s, this example is a beautifully presented car in red, with an impressive black leather interior. It’s a beautifully kept Sting-Ray that’s ready and raring for its next adventure.
The History and Paperwork
- USA registration papers
- All valid EU import documents provided
The Interior
- A well-appointed interior throughout with leather bucket seats and dash
- Distinctive wood-trimmed steering wheel with branding
- Heavily original interior with very little wear
The C2 Sting Ray was naturally well appointed, with black leather and steel setting a distinctly modern tone for the retro-futurist audience of the 1960s.
The chunky instruments are surrounded by heavy metal cowling and accents, with a wooden-trimmed steering wheel acting as a stylish centrepiece - all completed with chunky and comfortable black leather bucket seats.
This example is in very good condition, with some minor damage to the seats and a patina to their chrome outer frames. The carpets are in excellent condition, with the dashboard, door cards and accents all in very good order. Ultimately, this is a superb example of a well-received cockpit.
The Exterior
- Bright red livery with chrome accents
- Distinctive five-spoke alloys with a good set of tyres
- Paintwork looks good overall from 2-3ft away, showing a few age related marks
The C2 Sting Ray’s shape is an immediate head-turner, with sleek fibreglass panels leading to a distinct flowing shape, hide-away headlights and an obscured grill. This example shows no damage to its panels that we can discern either, creating a distinctly unmolested look.
The bright red paintwork has been well-kept throughout overall, and shows only a few signs of wear. We can’t spot any problem areas across the vehicle’s body, with all of the accents displaying very nicely and no signs of damage to the seams, sills or vents.
No photographs of the underside have been provided, but we’ve not been informed of any issues. The glass work is all in excellent order, while the wheels appear to be in excellent stead with a good set of tyres.
The Mechanics
- No mechanical faults have been reported regarding the vehicle
- Engine bay looks to be in good order and clean
- No reports of leaks, knocks or smoke
The mechanical condition of this C2 Sting Ray is said to be in excellent order. It’s fitted with the most powerful basic Small-Block V8, which presents very nicely under the bonnet. There are no signs of excessive corrosion that we can spot, continuing the theme of an ultimately clean, well-kept example of the popular model.
Summary
Everything here acts as an excellent example of the C2 Sting Ray. The distinctive shape, the sharp handling and that famous V8 engine makes the type a simply superb all-rounder. With very little in the way of faults or blemishes to report, this is the perfect opportunity to get behind the wheel and see what made this one of the 60’s finest sports cars.
