  • 3.4 litre
  • Restored in 2014
  • Rebuilt engine 5,000 miles ago
  • Well presented

The Background

Probably one of the most iconic saloon cars made in the 50s-60s, classic looks, comfortable saloon with plenty of room and performance to match, which is why it was a firm favourite for some, shall we say, not so legally abiding citizens and the police.

Launched in 1959, the MK2 Jaguar was launched and fitted with either a 2.4 Litre producing 120bhp, or the much more powerful 3.4 Litre which produces 210bhp. With excellent handling, this made it a very capable car, and it's no surprise why the car was so popular, and even today, with those 210 horses, it's no slouch and easily capable of keeping up with today's modern-day traffic.

The History

The seller of this lovely 1963 Jaguar MK2 purchased the car in 2013. It was already in nice condition following some restoration back in the early 2000s. Shortly after the seller acquired the Jaguar, he decided he would send it to have another freshen up to address some areas needing some attention.

Since being completed, the Jaguar spent several years living in the sunshine over in Spain before coming back to the UK, where it has been used little and often, keeping everything ticking over as it should. Approximately 5,000 miles ago, the seller had the engine rebuilt and at the same time, it made sense to fit a new clutch.

The Paperwork

The V5 is present and shows 5 previous keepers for the vehicle.
There are a substantial amount of receipts and invoices making up the history file of the Jaguar. These range from parts and work carried out both here in the UK, and from its time in Spain.
Now exempt from an MOT, the last was carried out on the 6th December 2017 at 74,904 miles, just 398 miles ago.

The Interior

Inside, this particular MK2 Jaguar has a little bonus of having the seats and 'ski slope' from a Jaguar XJ40 fitted, with the front seats being electric. There is one issue with the driver's seat that is the rake adjustment is sometimes intermittent. The seats have gone in the car extremely well and are trimmed in cream leather, finished with red piping.

The seats are in good condition with just a small amount of light creasing and some slight wear to the colour on the driver’s bolster. The rear seat is again from the XJ40 and is in good condition, looking like it's not had a great deal of use. For your safety, there is also a full set of seat-belts fitted, in matching beige to the interior.
The dashboard has been finished with a burr walnut fascia which is in excellent condition, with no crazing to the lacquer as often seen. The instruments are all reported to be working as they should. The oil pressure is healthy and the odometer has a reading of 75,302 miles. To the centre, the row of switches is in good order with the lettering above them clear and eligible for each operation. Lower down, the Jaguar has a Pioneer CD head-unit fitted bringing you the in-car entertainment. A problem that the seller mentioned is that the heaters do not work in the hot setting, but this has not been investigated.
The beige carpets have been replaced and are in excellent condition, as have the headlining which shows no signs of sagging. Into the boot, and this also has matching beige carpet in clean condition. Lifting the floor reviews the spare wheel in good condition, together with the jack and knock-off hammer.

The Exterior

Finished in Signal Red, this 1963 Jaguar MK2 is in splendid condition, having had a restoration in 2015. Starting at the front of the car, the chrome work is in good order, with just some light tarnishing to mention, and a few light polishing scratches as you would expect. The bonnet aligns well with the wings and opens and closes with ease. Sitting pride of place is the Jaguar bonnet mascot above the 3.4-litre badge, which is in excellent condition.
Around to the sides, and looking down the lines of the Jag, everything looks to be in order. The swage lines are uninterrupted by any dings or dents, and the door gaps look to be nice and tight. There is a small amount of blistering to the rear passenger door which is approximately 1.5” up from the bottom edge. The chrome work around the windows is in nice condition, with just some light age-related marks. The glass itself all looks good too, with no heavy scratches to mention.
To the rear, everything looks to be in order. The light lenses are free from any splits, there is a small amount of perishing around the cluster seals, but an easy item to replace if required. The boot lid aligns straight with an even gap around all sides, and the bumper is in the same condition as the front with just a small amount of tarnishing to be seen.
The chrome wire wheels are generally in good order, there are some small amounts of corrosion but these are believed to be the originals. The tyres are matching Hankook and are in as new condition having covered approximately 100 miles at the most.

The Mechanics

The 3.4-litre straight-six engine was fully rebuilt in 2015, and since then it has covered approximately 5,000 miles. Running as smooth as ever, the straight-six fires up with a quick flick of the key, thanks to the electronic ignition system providing a good solid spark, and the engine comes to life and sounds fantastic breathing through the rebuilt twin SU carburettors. Keeping things cool is a Hi-flow radiator with Kenlowe fans.
At the same time that the engine was rebuilt, it made sense to fit a new clutch. The gear change is reported to be precise and the car moves through the 4-speed gearbox with ease, and the overdrive works as it should.
The suspension feels just right as you drive along the road. The ride is firm thanks to the Spax adjustable suspension which is neither too soft nor too hard, just enough firmness to make you feel safe in the corners. Stopping the Jaguar nicely, are the 4 disc brakes which are working just as they should, bringing the heavy MK2 to a halt quickly, straight and with no juddering through the pedal.

The Appeal

The car has had a nice restoration carried out in 2015, together with a full engine rebuild and new clutch. Since then the car has covered around 5,000 miles, most of which were just after the restoration, as can be seen on the MOT history. The interior is from an XJ40 which has added more comfort and luxury, with electric seats and also inertia seat-belts.
An iconic car of the 1960s, which is capable of being used and enjoyed on a daily basis. It handles well, keeps up with modern-day traffic with ease, and has enough room for all the family. What is there not to like about this British icon Jaguar MK2?
