1962 Porsche Diesel Junior 109 Tractor

Highlights

  • Beautifully appointed Junior Tractor from the world-renowned company
  • Impressive piece of early Porsche history with attractive bodywork
  • Thorough restoration with invoices provided

The Appeal

Introduced in 1954, the diesel Junior Tractor was rooted in the idea of a ‘peoples’ tractor’ - a small, lightweight and easy-to-keep piece of machinery with more than a little splash of extravagant, streamlined design. There were four basic models, all designed to be standardised with exchangeable, easy-to-come-by parts.
The result was not, perhaps, the largest or most powerful piece of equipment - but it became one of the most beloved. This example, which first received UK road registration in 2014, has been cossetted to create a prime example of the highly characterful machine.

The History and Paperwork

  • Originally built in 1962 and sold to the Mannesmann concern of Germany
  • Underwent a thorough registration in 2014, after which it was registered for road use
  • Paperwork file includes:
    • Impressive collection of invoices
    • Paperwork from the Porsche Club’s Tractor Registry tracing the tractor’s heritage
    • Original 1960s handbook with importer stamp
    • Selection of manuals and handbooks, kept on three CDs
    • Paperwork referring to the car’s registration
    • V5 document

The Condition

  • Attractive streamlined design sets an art deco feel
  • Highly maintained with working dents and dinks still in situ
  • Period-accurate cream-coloured wheels with a good set of tyres including new front tyres
It’s fair to say one wouldn’t expect much of an ‘interior’ from any tractor, let alone a little Porsche Junior - but what the driver is confronted with is just as characterful and pleasant as the rest of this machine. The driver’s seat - and the secondary seat, mounted atop the left-hand wheel arch - are all carrying fresh, branded upholstery, that’s clear of rips and tears.
A single combined dial, a little light cluster and some small tactile instruments are all you’re greeted by on the painted metal dashboard, while the switchgear and handbrake are nicely presented below the seat. It’s all clean and nicely kept, while maintaining some of the characteristic form of an industrial unit.
The bodywork, with its attractive streamlined design, shows some dents and dints to the tractor’s front, something in keeping with its industrial heritage. They’ve been kept in situ and carefully painted over to maintain structural integrity, giving the tractor an attractive working character without causing any concerns. You can expect the odd uneven surface - in line with the tractor’s purpose - but all of the linkage, mechanics and equipment look to be in fine fettle.
The headlight lenses and mounts look superb, as do all of the badges and trims.
The wheels - kept in their period-accurate cream - show some signs of wear, but present brightly against the red paintwork and are shod in what appears to be a good set of tyres.

The Mechanics

  • Single-cylinder, 822cc air-cooled diesel engine
  • Six-speed gearbox with high/low range, rear diff lock and PTO
  • New cylinder and piston, installed circa 2014
With a remarkably simple, standardised engine, these tractors are a supremely usable machine even for the layman. This example has been beautifully maintained with all of that hardware looking to be in superb condition.
The tractor reportedly starts first time with zero faults - which appears to be in line with appearances. These tractors aren’t the most powerful machines in the world, but are still very capable machines that are more than at home in most rural settings.
Of course, thanks to the superb aesthetics, it’ll be a winner at car shows and vintage weekends, too - even before people notice its legendary branding.

Summary

Nicely kept, mechanically sound and beautifully designed, it’s no wonder these little tractors are a beloved component of Porsche’s history. We can think of no reasons to refuse this stunning machine.
