1962 Alfa Romeo 2000 Touring

Photos provided by the vendor

Highlights

  • Coachbuilt Spider bodywork by Touring of Milan
  • Powered by Alfa’s inimitable twin-cam four cylinder engine in 2.0-litre form
  • Presented in very good overall condition

The Appeal

Alfa Romeo has a long history of producing stylish convertibles or ‘Spiders’, but the 2000 Touring was actually something a bit different. Aimed at the grand tourer sector to compete with the likes of Ferrari and Maserati, the Touring was bigger and more refined than its Giulietta-based sibling while remaining a strong performer. Powered by a 2.0-litre version of Alfa Romeo’s legendary twin-cam and bodied by Touring of Milan, it was an exquisite machine that remains eminently desirable to this day.
Here we have a very presentable 1962 example, finished in red which always suits Alfas. It’s in lovely condition throughout and looks fantastic from every angle. We struggle to think of a nicer way to cruise along than in this car with the roof down, so if convertible grand touring appeals, don’t hesitate in making this fabulous Italian yours.

The History and Paperwork

  • Road registered in South Africa
  • Left-hand drive
  • The vendor informs us that it still wears its original colour
  • It looks to be a very original car that’s likely benefitted from sympathetic restoration work and general maintenance over the years

The Interior

  • Black upholstery as per original specification
  • Red carpeting with black overmats
  • In very good condition
As a grand tourer, the 2000 Touring’s interior is plush and comfortable, with ample space for passengers up front with some additional seating in the rear. The black upholstery looks to be in really fine condition and has likely been retrimmed in the not-too-distant past.
Stepping aboard, you’re greeted by an array of beautiful Veglia instruments and a dashboard that looks to be highly original. We enjoy how there appear to be no later additions, with even the original blanking plate remaining in places. A delightful wood-rimmed steering wheel feels great in your hands and we find the gear lever to be just where you’d want it.
All the carpeting looks to be in nice order so far as we could see and it's protected by practical black overmats.
Evidently, this interior has received some attention in the past as there’s not much wear or any signs of damage we could see.

The Exterior

  • Coachwork by Touring of Milan
  • Handsome “Rosso” red paintwork
  • Slight patination visible in places
This is one of the larger convertibles of the period but it carries its size really well thanks to the masterful work of Carrozzeria Touring.
This Alfa’s bodywork looks to be really straight and the panels align nicely. The paint exhibits some patination in places, especially around the trims and edges of panels, but nothing especially noticeable. We’ve not seen the roof raised but we understand it to be in good condition and operating correctly.
All the trims look great with only the lightest blemishes in places and no significant damage evident. The car sits upon its factory steel wheels complete with hubcaps. Underneath, all appears in nice shape with no signs of excessive corrosion.

The Mechanics

  • 2.0-litre four-cylinder DOHC
  • Five-speed manual gearbox
  • All appears in fine order under the bonnet
The vendor reports that the engine runs spiritedly and the car performs well. Few vehicles of this vintage had five-speed gearboxes and this one reportedly selects gears smoothly. That twin-cam looks resplendent under the bonnet and all appears to be in good order with no evidence of excessive leaks.
The vendor comments that this model strikes a perfect balance between relaxed cruising and sports ability, making it a great all-rounder.

Summary

With their great looks and competent road manners, it’s no wonder this model is so desirable. We’re delighted to offer this very presentable example and we enjoy its originality which makes it so usable.
