1958 Maserati 125 GTS

Vendor supplied images

Highlights

  • Presented in very good condition both cosmetically and mechanically
  • A lesser seen classic bike that wears the Maserati trident
  • Recently rebuilt engine means that this bike is running and riding well
  • Can be ridden on a CBT License

The Appeal

You’d be forgiven for not knowing Maserati once produced motorcycles, but their brief foray into bike production produced some very interesting two-wheeled machines and remains an important piece of Maserati history. Cars were an exceedingly expensive luxury in post-war Italy, making motorcycles a more cost-effective option.
This 1958 GTS punches well above its weight with sprightly performance in spite of its diminutive 125cc engine. With a beautifully constructed lightweight frame and a four-speed gearbox, this plucky little Italian bike is a joy to ride and following extensive recent mechanical work, in very healthy condition.

The History and Paperwork

  • The vendor was informed that the Maserati was restored in the mid 2000s
  • Acquired by the vendor in December 2015 from Rome
  • The previous owner reportedly bought it earlier the same year from Frosinone, Italy
  • Imported and UK registered in February 2016
  • The bike was then handed to an Italian motorcycle specialist who worked through all the mechanicals, completing it towards the end of 2020
  • It was then sent to another specialist who rebuilt the engine
  • The bike was completed and ready to use in January 2022
  • The vendor is willing to assist with transportation overseas

The Condition

  • Very smart red paintwork
  • All the brightwork is in fine condition
  • Very little wear to speak of
This Maserati proves that motorcycles needn't be big and powerful in order to look great. It boasts rakish styling, with that sleek tank, narrow frame and drop handlebars.
The red paintwork appears in really good condition and truly shines under natural light. The black motif on the tank edged by a gold pinstripe is a lovely stylistic feature and it’s always a pleasure to see the Maserati trident. The vendor points out a few chips here and there from use, some of which have been touched in, but these are not especially notable. The paint is now around fifteen years old, but remains in great shape overall.
The aluminium wire wheels look great, as do the brake drums. These are further complemented by chrome accents all over the bike including the exhaust, rear springs, handlebars, fuel filler cap and headlamp trim. There is very little wear to report to any of the controls and the Maserati embossed red grips are a particularly stylish touch. The seat has evidently been reupholstered and it remains in really good condition.

The Mechanics

  • Rebuilt 123cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine
  • Runs and rides impeccably
  • Four-speed gearbox, a feature that separates the GTS from other 125 models
Following a thorough overhaul of the mechanicals and a complete engine rebuild since the Maserati arrived in the UK, it runs really well and rides brilliantly. The vendor informs us that the bike is easy to start and it runs strongly. They suggest a little fettling to the foot selector might make changing gear a little easier for long journeys although all gears engage as they should.

Summary

This is a lovely example of an elegant motorcycle. These small capacity Italian bikes have quite the collector following and we’re sure this bike’s next owner will be the envy of fellow enthusiasts.
