The Appeal
Motobecane has a rich history of producing motorcycles and mopeds, having once been the leading French manufacturer for seven decades. Notable for their success in competition, the company's demise is a depressingly familiar story due to the rise of Japanese manufacturers.
Conventionally engineered, the bikes gained a reputation for durability. The U57C series bikes were fitted with rear hydraulic shock absorbers and a swinging arm and were considered the comfort version of the series and therefore known as the Motoconfort. Known for their reputation for reliability, these bikes were steady sellers from 1956 to 1961. The U57C was created as a de-spec’d 125cc version of the Z series, with a larger fuel tank and streamlined fairing. Badged as the Mobystand 57, the secret to the success of the U57C also comes down to the impressive economy of the 125cc OHV 4-Stroke motors.
Imported into the UK in 2020, this 1957 U57C is believed to be the only example currently registered for UK roads. There is also the added advantage of not needing road tax or an MOT. In addition, its CBT legibility literally allows you to jump on it and head down to your local French farmers market. Previously owned by a French enthusiast, it has seen a handful of improvements but is mainly as stock as it was when new.
