Highlights
- Desirable cabriolet body
- Excellent paintwork and trim
- Extremely clean and tidy underneath
The Appeal
Reintroduced in 1945, the elegant BMW 327 was available as either a coupé or a cabriolet, and it is the latter which we present here. With the hood down, it has a pleasing line and its gracefully flowing wings are a timelessly attractive feature.
This particular 327 lived most of its life in Switzerland, where eventually it was restored in the 1990s. This appears to have been very well executed, and it remains in superb condition throughout.
The red and cream paint is very well presented, the retrimmed interior shows little sign of use and the underside is reassuringly clean. This all adds up to make a very desirable motorcar, which is ready to be driven and enjoyed.
The History and Paperwork
- Built in the BMW Eisenach Works, East Germany
- First registered in Lausanne Switzerland, in 1953
- The car reportedly remained in Switzerland until recently
- Restored in the 1990s
- Then brought to the Netherlands, with all taxes and VAT having reportedly been fully paid
- Declaration of originality from BMW
The Interior
- Beautifully upholstered leather seating
- Excellent light tan carpets
- Simple, well designed dashboard
The interior of this BMW is a masterclass in the implementation of the ‘less is more’ school of thought. Its sleek, minimalist layout is beautifully understated and functional.
Opening the door reveals a pair of very well upholstered front seats, with excellent leather and very few signs of use. The same leather carries on to the door cards and the matching rear seats. It is very well presented, and there are no obvious blemishes, stains or scuffs.
The driver is presented with a fabulous white steering wheel, with chrome spokes. In front of this is the stylish and uncluttered dashboard, with its clear, bold instrumentation and tactile pull switches. And the individual windscreen panes can be wound open for extra ventilation.
The Exterior
- Fabulous two-tone red and cream paint
- Underside very well presented
- Chrome and aluminium trim very good
With its graceful, sweeping lines the 327 is a symphony in stylish design. The front winds flow beautifully into the running boards, and the tall front grille stands proudly bearing the blue and white BMW badge.
The body panels all look to be ingot, straight condition and they wear a superb coat of paint. The red and cream livery is bold and very well applied. There are only a few light marks we could discern, but nothing which detracts from the overall appeal of the car.
Weather protection is provided by a fabric hood, which is very clean and tidy, with no apparent damage or staining. It appears to provide a good seal and should keep its occupants well protected from inclement weather.
The car runs on pressed steel wheels, which match the red and cream colour scheme. They are drilled for ventilation and feature large chrome hubcaps, which also bear the BMW badge. They are shod in a set of whitewall tyres, which suit the car wonderfully.
Underneath, the good new continues, with the chassis and floorpans appearing to be in a superb state of preservation. We couldn’t see any damage or corrosion to speak of, testament to the good work of the car’s restorers.
The Mechanics
- 1,971cc straight-six engine
- Twin carburettors
- Said to drive very smoothly
The long bonnet of this 327 conceals its powerful straight-six overhead-valve engine, which gives the car its capable performance. The engine bay looks very clean and well kept, with no evidence of leaks or overheating.
The vendor informs us that the car starts easily, drives very smoothly and changes gear without issue. And with an official top speed of 125 km/h it is certainly an eminently useable motorcar, even on today’s roads.
Summary
In all, this beautifully restored BMW is presented in glistening condition. It certainly draws the eye, and has been extensively and expertly restored.
