The Appeal
MG were onto a winning formula when they released the TA Midget in 1936. Little did they know that the T-type would be produced for nearly 20 years and prove an international success.
This particular TD appears to be in good condition and will make a fun little runaround for its next owner. Finished in red, with a tan leather interior, it is sure to be noticed wherever it goes and will gain admiring glances from onlookers.
These T-type MGs are as fun as the day they were built and it is easy to see why the were such a runaway international success. The low doors, open-top bodywork and vintage styling make this an attractive prospect for anyone looking for a fun way to get around.

Upon opening the low, rear-hinged doors and assuming the driving position, you are presented with a reassuringly large steering wheel and a beautifully shaped leather-trimmed dashboard. The gauges are all said to function correctly, with the exception of the clock, as do the switches. The state of the road speed, engine revs, oil pressure, coolant temperature and charge rate are all supplied to the driver.
Behind the adjustable backrest of the bench seat, there is enough space for some luggage, as well as a cubby hole for extra items. So this TD is the ideal transportation for weekends away.
The Exterior
- Striking red coachwork
- Chrome in good condition
- Underneath clean and tidy
Finished in a fetching shade of bright red, this MG is sure to attract the attention of passers-by. Its unashamedly prewar styling has aged very well and it is certainly an attractive motorcar.
The paint appears to be in generally good condition, with a normal amount of age-related wear. There are some minor scratches, chips and cracks and there is some cracking to the paint around the filler neck, which appears to have been touched up since.
Chrome fittings abound, from the radiator grille to the bumpers and overriders. The plating looks bright and well polished, and free from excessive pitting or flaking. The car sits on steel wheels which are in very good condition and the tyres are said to be new.
A set of side-screens are provided in case of inclement weather. They look to be free from clouding and would provide good protection from the elements. The roof functions as intended and and a half tonneau is provided to cover the rear luggage compartment. A pair of aero screens are also included, should you desire a more sporting look.
Underneath, the car appears to be very clean and tidy, with few signs of corrosion and no reported damage.
The Mechanics
- 1250cc XPAG engine
- Very clean engine bay
- Has been stored, so tuning recommended
The 1250cc XPAG engine is at the heart of this MG TD. It is a well-regarded unit and gives the car lively performance. Coupled with the lightweight construction of the body, this makes for a nimble and fun driving experience.
The vendor informs us that this MG drives as it should do, but that having spent some time in storage it would benefit from a tune up. It is said to accelerate, change gear and brake well and there are no reported oil leaks or smoke.
Summary
In all, this MG TD is an appealing car, the result of a long line of improvements upon a long-standing design ethos. It is presented in good all round condition, looking both smart and useable.
The next owner will certainly enjoy the benefits of open top motoring in this sports car and will be the envy of fellow road users.
