Opening the rear-hinged doors allows easy access to this Mercedes’ interior reveals a very well presented collection of leather, wood, chrome and carpet. The red hide upholstery is bright and smart, with few signs of use in evidence, and no obvious scuffs stains or tears. This brightly coloured leather continues onto the door cards, which also remain smart and clean.
Matching red carpets and overmats cover the floors, and are in a similarly unblemished state. There is no evidence of wear or stains that we could see. And fold-down occasional seating is provided for two rear passengers.
The driver is presented with a reassuringly large Bakelite steering wheel which features a chrome horn ring, a white Mercedes badge at its centre and a column-mounted gear change. The dashboard is sensibly laid out, with bold, clear instrumentation and tactile chrome pull switches. At its centre is a beautiful period-correct ratio mounted upon a wooden plinth to match the door cappings and dashboard top. The wood is highly polished and features finely figured grain.
To the rear, a sizeable boot provides plenty of accommodation for luggage, and is fully trimmed in red carpet with red edging. It remains clean, tidy and well presented.
The Exterior
- Stylish cabriolet body
- Excellent paintwork throughout
- Imposing chrome radiator, surmounted by the Mercedes star
The sweeping lines of this 220 cabriolet are a masterclass in automotive styling. From the tall chrome radiator to the curvaceous wings, and the gently sloping tail, this Mercedes looks superb from any angle.
This car’s paintwork is superbly finished and has clearly been well maintained. It exhibits a deep shine and a lustrous colour. There are very few signs of use, with no significant scratches or chips that we could see.
The colour-matched steel wheels look great, and are finished with chrome-detailed hubcaps and shod in smart whitewall tyres. The underside of the car is very clean and tidy, with no corrosion or damage evident.
Chrome plating covers most of the exterior trim and retains a good shine, with little pitting to speak of. The lamp lenses look clear and bright, with no chips or cracks and the badges are present and correct. The beige hood appears to fit snugly and remains free from damage or stains. It provides excellent weather protection when raised.
The Mechanics
- Original 2.2-litre straight-six engine produces 79hp
- Four-speed manual transmission
- Engine bay clean and tidy
Raising the lengthy bonnet of this 220 reveals the straight-six engine which powers the car. It is a 2.2-litre unit which produces 79hp and sends this to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.
The engine bay appears to be very clean and tidy. It is beautifully presented and the rubber hoses look like they have been fitted recently. On the underside of the bonnet is a light which automatically illuminates when the bonnet is raised, a useful feature for checking the oil after dusk.
Underneath, the running gear is presented in very clean condition. Suspension is provided by coil springs front and rear, and the exhaust system appears to be recently fitted.
Summary
This 220 is clearly in excellent condition throughout. It will certainly attract admiring glances wherever it is driven, and will be welcomed at all manner of shows and events this summer.
