1950 Norton 16H Sidecar Outfit

Highlights

  • Wonderful original feel and light patina
  • Very low miles since comprehensive restoration
  • Appealing and different sidecar combination

The Appeal

This stunning Norton 16H motorcycle and sidecar outfit is truly a wonderful example, very well restored and also very unique, being that this particular combination features the sidecar from a 1980 Ural M-63, which was fitted during this motorcycles restoration, and despite being very different machines, the sidecar looks perfectly at home on the Norton and certainly looks the part. Overall an exceptional combination that is sure to turn heads!

The History and Paperwork

  • V5 Present
  • Full documentation detailing restoration
  • Original Norton manual
This bike has a wonderful back story. Originally when new in 1950 this bike was built by Norton as a test bike for the Post Office to see if it was suitable for their needs, it was subsequently used by the post office for many years, until it was retired and disassembled and put in storage. The motorcycle was then bought by the vendor’s father in 1980, used a very small amount and then, in 1981 it was treated to a full restoration by Robin James Engineering Services.
There is mountains of receipts, evidence and documentation detailing the restoration and the amounts spent on bringing this lovely machine back to fantastic running condition.

Also included is some lovely details like an advertisement pamphlet in French showing this motorcycle, the original Norton Book No. 101/N.C.1. maintenance manual and instruction book.

The Exterior

  • Lovely Reflex spring seat saddle
  • Fantastic original feel retained throughout
  • Ural M-63 sidecar
This lovely combination is a delight to behold, and is very different, featuring the 1980 Ural M-63 sidecar. Its not every day you see such an iconic British branded motorcycle mated to a Ural sidecar but it works very well, the combination is all matched and they compliment each other perfectly.  Despite having a full restoration in 1981, and having had very little use since, you can tell it was a very sympathetic restoration.

Careful attention has been taken to avoid losing the original feel of this classic motorcycle while ensuring that where it counts it wants for nothing and functions as it should. Some nice details are the Smiths gauge, the Reflex springer saddle, and being a 1950 model it features telescopic forks as well which suit the bike perfectly.

The Mechanics

  • Started without trouble
  • Runs very nicely no smoke
  • Comprehensive mechanical overhaul in 1981
All mechanical aspects of this brilliant 16H were taken good care of during its restoration. It has barely been ridden any miles since, in fact only 792 miles since restoration and it having a complete engine and gearbox rebuild. Even after sitting in dry storage for a long time it started right up, with no smoke on a cold start and ran beautifully.

This motorcycle has always been used as a sidecar outfit, and as such is well setup and has the proper tyres for sidecar use fitted. Overall it wants for nothing and everything functions as it should.

A nice inclusion is a spare Lucas dynamo, in original vintage box.

Summary

Overall, a wonderful and complete sidecar outfit, with a fascinating history in service to the Post Office and the tale of its rescue and car with the same family in the past 42 years! A well restored machine which excels where it matters, and retains its original character perfectly. For certain a machine to be cherished and enjoyed for many years to come.
