1949 Triumph 2000 Roadster (TRA)

Highlights

  • Gorgeous Triumph 2000 Roadster benefiting from recent documented restoration
  • Subtle and judicious modern upgrades including gearbox, power steering and front disc brakes
  • Benefiting from a new interior retrim with new black hood
  • Charming dickey seat arrangement

The Appeal

Enjoying a production run from 1946 to 1949, the Triumph Roadster was a beautifully styled open-top sports car with the ability, thanks to its clever dickey seat arrangement, to carry up to five people.
Responding to a need to produce a car to rival the likes of Jaguar in the post-war period, the Roadster adopted a shortened version of the tubular steel chassis of the 1800 saloon. Over the top of this sturdy structure was a hand-made body fabricated almost entirely aluminium, apart from its steel front wings.
Starting out as the 1800 (18TR) Roadster in 1946, the model was updated in 1948 with the addition of the more powerful and larger capacity Vanguard engine, resulting in significantly improved acceleration and a slightly higher top speed.
Looking at the Roadster today it’s hard not to be immediately taken in by its gorgeous generous curves and impressively long bonnet, beautifully finished by two large chromed headlamps.
This particular example benefits from an extensive restoration over the past year whilst under current ownership and is finished in a beautiful shade of Nassau blue over a newly trimmed black interior.
A lovely looking classic, it’s certainly not hard to imagine enjoying a sunny countryside jaunt in this attractive Roadster, and with the clever dickey seat arrangement, all the family can come along too!

The History and Paperwork

  • Documents detailing the extensive restoration work undertaken by A D Restorations in the past year
  • Photographic record detailing restoration

The Interior

  • Fully restored interior with accompanying interior retrim
  • Lovely dark wood dash benefiting from re-veneer during recent restoration, complemented by stylish refurbished and recalibrated instrumentation
  • Modern stereo system concealed in glovebox
Looking at the photographs provided, it’s clear that this Triumph has been treated to an interior retrim in stylish black during its recent restoration.
The interior is dominated by the recently restored full width dark wood dashboard which has an attractive grain pattern. Sitting centrally are two cream dials, a speedometer and a multiple function dial reporting water temperature, oil pressure and fuel. Below these gauges are indicator lights, push switches, and what appears to be a more recently added choke control.
An interesting feature of the Triumph Roadster are the triple wiper blades, and it would appear looking at the dashboard each one has a separate control knob - offering the driver a multitude of windscreen wiping options!
We can see a modern stereo system has been fitted to the Triumph but placed cleverly in the glovebox, as to not detract from the period feel of the car. Seatbelts, another modern but sensible addition, have also been fitted.

The Exterior

  • Freshly presented in a gorgeous shade of Nassau blue  following a bare metal respray, with a new black soft top and restored roof mechanism
  • Ample chrome adornments in fabulous restored condition
  • New tyres fitted all round, with a spare in the dickey lid!
Fresh from a thorough and photographed restoration, needless to say this Triumph Roadster presents in excellent condition. Body panels appear very straight with good shut lines and as can be seen from the photographs, the dickey seat and rear screen mechanisms are fully operational.
Restoration photographs also demonstrate that the hood mechanism has been completely restored, with new wooden support struts and black fabric added.
Additionally, charming features such as the semaphores appear to be operational and are sure to elicit smiles from passers-by!

The Mechanics

  • Benefiting from a complete documented engine rebuild during recent restoration
  • TR3 twin H6 SU carburettors fitted on modified TR4 manifold to improve bonnet clearance, with the addition of electronic ignition
  • Fitment of an upgraded Triumph 2500 gearbox, now a floor-mounted 4-speed with overdrive
  • Power steering fitted
  • Conversion to upgraded disc brakes on the front wheels
  • New wiring loom fitted with flashing LED indicators to front and rear
  • Chassis and body restoration work
During its recent restoration this Triumph has benefited from numerous mechanical upgrades, improving both its versatility and safety in modern traffic. The fitment of modern disc brakes upfront have improved braking performance over the original drums, and a more modern 4-speed gearbox with overdrive replaces the original column-shifter arrangement.
Whilst undergoing restoration, any areas of the Triumph found to be requiring attention were fully addressed. This work included modification to the chassis and floor of the car in order to allow fitment of the new floor-mounted gearbox.
Speaking to the owner he reports that the Triumph now performs very well whilst out on the road and, given the recent engine rebuild and other mechanical upgrades, we would certainly expect this to be the case.

Summary

A very attractive example of the classic Triumph 2000 Roadster, coming fresh from a recent restoration with a number of sensible mechanical upgrades. A stylish classic with the added practicality of dickey seating, making for a lovely summer tourer which could be enjoyed with family and friends.
