1947 Triumph 1800 Roadster RHD

Highlights

  • One of only 2501 ever made
  • Last ever car produced with a ‘Dickey seat’
  • Beautifully and comprehensively restored in period correct colours

The Appeal

Few cars come rarer than this Triumph Roadster and even fewer in this absolutely incredible, restored condition. Blessed with a new coat of paint, full interior retrim to the highest standard and mechanically overhauled, not an inch of this car has been overlooked and would not just be a fabulous piece of automotive history added to anyone's collection, but would be a sure-fire show winner at the right event. That being said, in areas, the restoration has been somewhat sympathetic, retaining that wonderful, light patina showing a life of use that simply compliments the aesthetic feel and authenticity of the vehicle.

History and paperwork

  • Thorough restoration throughout the entire vehicle evidently completed recently
  • Recent servicing to the engine and braking system
  • Post Standard takeover example complete with the 1800 Standard engine

The Interior

  • Tremendously well finished and restored interior with some original features
  • Operational dickey seats to the rear with protective wind shield
  • All wooden trim either well preserved or restored
  • Original dials in superb condition with clean and clear glass
Spectacularly presented in a dark red and dark wood trim, this interior is not far off perfect, evidently having been professionally re-trimmed in quality materials yet retaining some original features including some of the dashboard ancillaries, wooden trim, steering wheel and the ‘dickie seats’ mounted in the rear. The front seating area is described by the vendor ‘’as new’’ and the plush carpets are similarly nice, all fitted well with a nice leather trim to the floor mats to match.

The interior quality runs all the way through the car, right to the small back seats which pleasingly have been left alone and wear light patina but not looking out of place against the fabulous new carpets. The operation of the seats is as intended and would at a squeeze fit three adults and two children in the car, making this a practical historical car. It is quite evident the car is in no need of work in the interior and would be ready to be enjoyed
for years to come, truly showing the attention to detail and quality during the restoration.

The Exterior

  • Exceptionally well painted and finished with superbly glossy paint and well fitted brightwork
  • Original wheel trims and hub caps
  • Beautiful Triumph badge emblazoned upon the large chrome radiator grille
  • Tri-wiper setup
  • Beige canvas hood in superb, working order
We don't think there is a bad angle to this absolutely gorgeous post-war car and every panel, trim and shiny bit has been addressed with great care and attention leaving an all round, excellent example of an extremely rare car. The vast majority of the panels on this car were made from aluminium meaning little to no corrosion and likely more original panels. Just a glance tells you that some serious care has gone into the paintwork with a lovely deep gloss and smooth finish. At the rear of the car you will notice two small glass panels just above the boot compartment.

This is the ‘windscreen’ for the dickey seats which is still fully operational, folding upwards and locking in position on adjustable hinges for the comfort of passengers. The boot also folds down, supporting the spare wheel and there are two steps, each side of the
boot to allow easier access to the rear of the vehicle for either passengers or access to luggage. The brightwork, of which there is plenty on this era of car, is all in top order with no immediate evidence of serious imperfections to note, complimenting the entire look and finish of the car, tying it all together with an excellent finish and compelling presence!

The Mechanics

  • Very clean and tidy undercarriage
  • Recently serviced engine and brakes’
  • 65BHP Standard engine with a 4 speed column shift gearbox
Simply engineered, this car not just looks well but has been mechanically fettled and it shows. The engine bay of the 65BHP 4 pot engine is spotlessly clean for a classic, with little to no evidence of any leaks or built up dirt. Everything is wonderfully accessible and easily maintained for an enthusiast and the overall look of the engine is clean and fresh. Red plug leads stand out and contrast nicely against the black block and silver rocker cover, all oil and residue free.

The undercarriage, really is no different, with immaculate floorboards, chassis rails and outriggers have virtually no signs of corrosion and have been treated with a simple, light coating of underbody protectant. Even the steering components, fuel tank and fluid lines are all easily visible and look in very good shape. Likely many components have been replaced or overhauled due to the condition, but there is an authentic and untouched feel about the whole car, indicating real care in the past and currently.

Summary

Wonderfully presented and pretty much faultless in all aspects, 80 year old cars are rarely found in this condition and with such few numbers made, this really is a rare find. Although not the fastest car of its kind, Triumph were known for making some of the best
motorcycles of the time and so it is for certain the engineering that has gone into this Roadster will be of a similar calibre. Having the benefit of a vast restoration, there is little this car will need for some time other than the usual upkeep and care an vintage motor will require and the stunning look and the interesting quirks will likely keep the new owner well entertained.
