1936 Sunbeam Model 14 Sports

Highlights

  • Exceedingly rare - few Sport models known to be left
  • Outstanding condition throughout
  • Only four recorded keepers from new

The Appeal

Looking like a scaled-down version of the Model 9, the Model 14 or ‘250 Longstroke’ was unveiled in 1933 and remained in production until 1938, with the Sports model being arguably the most desirable of the range, with larger front wheels, downdraught carburettors, 3"  speedometer and revised compression to improve performance.
This particular Model 14 is a truly spectacular example of the breed, having evidently been cosseted and cherished over the years, showing only 7,200 miles on the odometer and presenting in outstanding condition throughout.

History and Paperwork

  • V5 registered keepers document, showing just 3 former keepers from new
  • Letter of provenance from the Marston Sunbeam Club & Register, confirming the bike as a factory Sport model, fitted with a 1938 Sport engine
  • Sunbeam 1928-1939 and ‘Sunbeam Four-stroke singles’ books included for reference
  • Purchased by the current owner in July 2021 as part of a developing collection of classic motorcycles, this Sunbeam is now being sold due to the owner shifting attention back to four-wheeled classics
  • Garaged throughout the seller’s ownership, a thorough once-over and light recommissioning is suggested before the bike is run and enjoyed

The Condition

  • Seat in good condition, with only a few small nicks and marks noted towards the rear of the seat
  • Knee pads on the side of the tanks in excellent condition, with no wear noted and the maker patent still clearly visible
  • The seller reports that the speedometer gearing is possibly in need of some attention, as pushing the bike around can show double digit speeds(!)
  • Outstanding condition throughout
  • Crisp, clear Sunbeam graphics/transfers, with original sticker behind front forks still visible
  • No signs of any damage, dents or major imperfections
  • A few small marks are visible on the front mud guard on the leading edge
  • The wheels are in very good condition overall, showing only a few signs of use upon close inspection
  • The vendor notes that the front tyre is cracking/perishing with age and would advise replacement before the bike is ridden on the open road

The Mechanicals

  • 250CC, four-stroke single cylinder air-cooled engine
  • The bike ran well when last used, though it has been sat for around eight months in the seller’s garage
  • Due to the oil tap being left open, the seller advises that the sump is drained, flushed and re-filled prior to the bike being started to prevent oil being thrown down the exhaust
  • Due to not having been used for a long period, a thorough inspection and possible light recommissioning is strongly suggested, though there are no known underlying faults to report

Summary

In need of only a light recommissioning before seeing the open road once again, this is a truly show-stopping Sunbeam Model 14 Sport (as confirmed by the letter of Provenance from the Sunbeam register) and is certain to draw plenty of attention wherever it goes, whilst its survival is testament to both the care it has received over the years, and to the level of quality that Sunbeam put into their products in the pre-war years.
