The Background
The Austin 10 was in production from 1932 until 1947 and came in several variants one of which is the Sherborne as featured here.
This was known as a “six light” (three windows down each side, with one behind the rear door) and the Sherborne body style was added in January 1936, the roof line swept to the rear without interruption to provide a flush back, this was known 'Airline' style at the time and was regarded as incredibly fashionable. This new rear shape allowed for extra deep seating at the rear, with added armrests. When launched the Sherborne with fixed or sliding roof was priced at an impressive £10 more than the equivalent Lichfield model.
Other features were that the front doors opened rearwards which was considered safer compared to other vehicles of the time, steering was now by worm and sector with an hour-glass worm. The engine was regarded as dependable but was not produced to set any land speed records.
The History
This particular Austin Sherborne is of a 1936 vintage making it 84 years old! The current owner has owned this car for the last 47 of those years and it’s considered a part of the family. Prior to his passing in 1999 the vehicle was maintained and cared for by the owner’s father who owned a Garage business and had experience in cars of this era. Post his passing the car has been garaged and only brought out for very special occasions such as use at weddings and birthdays and for upkeep and maintenance with the most significant works being undertaken in 2004,2006, 2014,2017 to keep her ship shape and usable.
As you will see from the images, the car is in largely original condition and has not been over restored. Everything is functional and meets vintage vehicle standards. She is not in concours condition, but I would describe her as usable and you can tell she has been loved for every one of her 36,888 miles of motoring.
The owner and her partner are now in their twilight years and wanted to let the car move onto another owner who could have as many years of enjoyment out of it that they have.
The Paperwork
There are MOTs dating back as far as 1966 and some servicing history and receipts for other works more recently from a number of different garages. The logbook is also present.
The Interior
The interior is original and in good condition, it wears it’s 84 years with pride. The Green leather upholstery shows signs of its vintage years but is not ripped or torn, it sports green carpets and exposed metal work as is typical with Austin's design. The wood dash and door caps are present and correct. It’s a lovely place to be.
The Exterior
The exterior again is original and much like the rest of the car doesn’t hide the fact that it’s firmly in the vintage motoring category. It’s still wearing it’s wire wheels , running boards, large headlamps and that signature Sherborne swept rear end. The paintwork is very good for something of this age and it’s a very honest car.
The Mechanics
As already mentioned, the vehicle has not had a full restoration but has been looked after with any mechanical work required being undertaken and a few mini overhauls during its life normally after any periods of inactivity to ensure it is roadworthy. It is presented as roadworthy and usable however please remember, it is 84 years old.
The Appeal
Vintage motoring is a wonderful scene to get into, typically, modern benefits such as power steering, speed, air con etc are forgotten in favour of the pure enjoyment and exhilaration experienced from driving one of these vintage automobiles. These cars are not meant to be raced from point to point so expect a much more serene driving experience and be prepared to sit back and waft along with many admiring onlookers as you just don’t see many of these cars on the road any more. If you're looking to get into Vintage motoring or you are after an ideal vintage vehicle that would benefit from a little light restoration, or maybe you have a wedding car business that needs some vintage class, this could very well be the one for you.
