1935 BSA Scout Roadster

Highlights

  • Rare Series 1 model
  • Recent mechanical overhaul
  • Comprehensively restored in 2013

The Appeal

The BSA name is well known for its motorcycling heritage, but thanks to the relationships with Lanchester and Daimler, a number of cars have also graced the BSA name. The Scout models were a series of compact, lively and manouverable cars with the additional distinction of using an FWD layout. The Scout's fundamental design was based on their prior three-wheeled design with a single wheel added in the back, which combined with a forward-placed gearbox and BSA’s reputation for sound engineering - ideal ingredients for a neatly handling car that could take on corners with gusto. Powered by their well-proven 1-litre 4-cylinder engines, these good-looking machines could easily be propelled to 70 mph.
Professionally restored in 2012-2013, this 1935 Series 1 two-seater roadster has also benefited from a recently rebuilt gearbox, clutch and starter motor. Furthermore, the engine had been reconditioned prior to its 2014 body restoration. It also has been registered with the DVLA and is accompanied by its original old-style logbook, as well as a folder full of relevant info and documentation.

The History and Paperwork

  • Purchased by the current owner only last summer, loss of storage forces the sale
  • Previously owned by a family since 2011 having only covered 3 miles since
  • Believed to have been restored in the early 90s and once again in 2012-2103 with photographic evidence
  • Gearbox recently rebuilt at a cost of £2,500
  • Car registered with DVLA will need V5C to be applied for
  • MOT suggests it was running shortly after its restoration
  • Original Log-book present
  • A selection of historical invoices
  • Period sales brochure included
  • Formerly handled by Retrolegends of Holland
  • BSA Owners club correspondence
  • CD ROM with diagrams instructions
  • Just needs a little light recommissioning to get back on the road

The Interior

  • The Interior appears to be complete and neatly presented
  • Leather seats in very good condition and free of marks or wear
  • Cabin furnished with carpet
  • All dials and switches are present and are said to function
  • The alloy glovebox will need refitting
  • Wooden facia in good shape
  • Steering wheel free of significant damage
  • Door cards are generally intact

The Exterior

  • Structurally solid with no outstanding issues in regard to body integrity
  • The red paint finish of a good standard with a handful of minor marks mostly on the wings
  • Needs a side screen and attention to the passenger door otherwise the panel work is in a good state
  • Grill needs renovation
  • Chrome work in decent order throughout
  • Tightly-woven double-duck canvas roof has a repairable tear to the front, otherwise in good condition
  • Glass and lights intact
  • Bonnet lid seals may need replacing
  • Neatly presented wire wheels with tight spokes and healthy tyres all round with new inner tubes

The Mechanics

  • 4-cylinder 1075cc
  • 2008 engine rebuild including crankshaft regrind, white metalling, new main + big end bearings, new pistons, rings, seals and valves.
  • The gearbox, clutch and new starter motor were rebuilt by the leading BSA expert
  • Engine turns but a likely head gasket issue stops it from being currently usable
  • Wiring also needs an investigation
  • Otherwise, engine inspection suggests that the bore compression is very good
  • Correct engine and gearbox oils
  • New battery and filter
  • Suspension and running gear appears to be in good shape
  • Would benefit an exhaust replacement

Summary

The BSA has a charming ‘Boys Own’ type of appeal and would be a perfect match for someone looking for a rare alternative to an Austin Seven Ulster. Two restorations over the last 30 years, as well as a significant amount of recent mechanical work, means it simply needs a little investigation to the engine to complete the job. In the right hands, it should be an easy and worthwhile project, particularly when you consider that much of the important work has already been completed.
