THE APPEAL
The influential Austin 7 is unquestionably a British and automotive icon, it changed the world when it was introduced, bringing affordable motoring to the masses and allowing manufacturers around the globe to benefit from their platform.
With various body styles available, the manufacturer conquered the market here in Britain, reigning as the most popular car throughout the 1920s and 1930s, but as well as producing road cars Austin frequented in the racing game, competing with high-performance variants of their Austin 7.
The Ulster name was acquired from the manufacturers' racing successes, specifically at the Trophy races on the Ards circuit in Ulster. These two-seater open-top sports models featured very much the same components equipped to the standard Austins but modified to encourage better performance.
Undergoing an extensive restoration over an approximate time frame of two years, this Austin 7 started life as a saloon but has been transformed into a gorgeous replica of the 1930s racer. Featuring an alloy body tub and bonnet with an integral floor and bulkhead plus fibreglass wings the lightweight tribute is presented very well and acts as a superb reminder of the vintage racer.
With the build completed some months ago, the car has been stored but still starts on the button and with a compelling soundtrack. With no road miles completed since the build finished the car awaits its next lease of life and further refinement.

The Ulster was designed with performance as a priority and it's no surprise that you’re not provided with extravagant luxury and practical functionality. What you do get, however, is a taste of 1930s vintage racing. Small indications of patina are present, but overall the condition is good, the authentically styled gauges from Smiths and Eureka combined with the reclaimed green leather seats and wrapped steering wheel bring a charismatic allure and a real sense of what it would be like to operate the classic racer.
THE EXTERIOR
- Alloy body tub & bonnet
- Fibreglass wings
- British racing green in presentable condition
- A fibreglass mould for the wings is included with the sale
Distinctively designed and superbly styled, the Ulster is a featherweight machine, intended to race and chase around tracks. The alloy body tub with integral floor and scuttle has a distinguishing boat tail and doorless entry. It has been fitted to a long wheelbase steel chassis from a saloon Austin 7 and is accompanied by fibreglass wings all painted the timeless British racing green. Its appearance, while not concours, is good and presents well. A fibreglass mould for the wings is included with the sale.
The Ruby wheels are described as good but with age-related abrasion but are equipped with new tubes and Brockley tyres. The mature racer is a charming replica of the great classic and while not perfect it certainly intrigues and creates interest with its looks and nostalgic style.
