1932 Morris Major

Highlights

  • An older restoration, still in excellent condition
  • Extensive and fascinating early history file
  • A very rare model, will be welcomed at shows this Summer

The Appeal

This Morris Major offers a great opportunity to acquire an attractive and very capable  and substantially sized 1930s saloon. It has plenty of room for carrying passengers and the six-cylinder engine is both strong and smooth.
The car was restored previously and remains in good condition throughout. Its paintwork and interior trim are very presentable, and the vendor informs us that it is running well.
One of the most interesting aspects of this car is its extensive history file. This contains original owner’s manuals and lubrication charts, as well as hand written invoices for servicing carried out from the ‘40s to the ‘60s, billed in pounds, shillings and pence. So this car isn’t just an attractive historical object, it has a story to tell too.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 18th August 1932
  • Road Tax and MOT exempt
  • Extensive original documentation
  • Original buff logbook and owner’s manual on file
  • Historic handwritten and typewritten invoices, in pounds, shillings and pence
  • Original lubrication chart
  • 8,684 miles (indicated)
  • The registration plate is not the original
  • Previously restored then the car saw little use

The Interior

  • Beautiful, fully retrimmed interior
  • The leather seats are expertly upholstered and show little sign of use
  • Carpets clean and tidy, with no fading or stains that we could see
  • Wind-up windows with wind deflectors
  • ‘Pytchley’ sliding roof
  • Baise headlining in good condition
  • The door cards are free from scuffs and wear
  • Well polished wooden door cappings
  • Sizeable steering wheel with hand controls for the ignition timing and dipping headlights
  • Oak dashboard with central instrument cluster
  • The fuel gauge is said to be a little temperamental
  • ‘Organ pedal’ centre throttle
  • Side vents in the scuttle allow for ventilation in the footwells
  • There are silk rope grab handles which come with the car but have not yet been fitted

The Exterior

  • Beautiful 1930s four-door saloon styling
  • Rear-hinged rear doors
  • Chrome radiator surround with ‘Calorstat’ thermostatically controlled louvres
  • Opening front windscreen for ventilation
  • Green-over-black paintwork
  • The paint is in good condition throughout, with a few small imperfections as expected on an older restoration
  • The roof and gutters are said to work as they should
  • Rear luggage rack with wicker hamper
  • The Le Mans style fuel filler cap is non original but in-keeping
  • ‘Pork pie’ rear lamps
  • All lights function without issue
  • The underside is very clean and tidy
  • The car runs on well-based wire wheels, with a matching set of Waymaster tyres

The Mechanics

  • 1,803cc straight-six engine
  • S.U. carburettor
  • Hydraulic drum brakes, said to function well
  • Original four-speed transmission, laid out in the conventional H-pattern
  • The vendor has recently fitted new spark plugs, leads and a replacement distributor cap
  • The fuel tank has been overhauled
  • The car is said to drive well, with a strong engine, smooth gear-change and a comfortable cruising speed
  • A few spare parts come with the car
  • This engine was also fitted to other Morris cars in the 1930s, so parts availability is good
  • The only reported issue is a slight blow from the exhaust down-pipe, which the vendor is investigating

Summary

A very useable, good sized pre-war car in good condition throughout. It has clearly been carefully maintained over the decades and comes with fascinating early history on file.
