The Standard Motor Company Limited was a motor vehicle manufacturer, founded in Coventry, England, in 1903 by Reginald Walter Maudslay.
It made a small number of models from two seaters to 4 door saloons. Later down the line it purchased in 1945 Standard purchased Triumph and started using the name on a lot of their models. They were also proficient in making tractors for a while, later selling their tractor side to Massey Ferguson. In 1960 Standard itself was purchased by British Leyland which then went bust in 1968.IMG_4217.JPG6.97 MB
The History
The vehicle is a 1930 Standard big 9 and it has been authenticated by the Standard Owners Club. It was purchased from a friend of the original builder, who was an engineer but had sadly passed on.
It is very strong and well built, but incredibly light, so would suit use as a trials vehicle.
The current owner is 6ft 3 and finds it a tad too small to be driven comfortably, so would suit someone a little shorter in the leg.
The car comes with a UK V5 and the import history paperwork NOVA etc. There are no fees due as it was imported and everything paid some time ago, it's just present for the history. The original 1930s manual is also present.IMG_4152.JPG5.26 MB
The Interior
The interior is sparse as is common with a vehicle of this type, but functional. The car has been rewired and modern instruments fitted which work very well but aren’t in keeping with the vehicles age necessarily.
The exterior is a metal frame with lightweight aluminium body panels keeping the car strong and light. The wheels have been painted yellow.IMG_4194.JPG6.42 MB
The Mechanics
Mechanically the car is in fine working order and is very easy to operate. The 1,287cc engine is spritely enough and delivers well through its 4 speed box. It also benefits from excellent ground clearance hence a life of trials would suit it.
A car like this is a classic example of great bang for your buck and is well suited to someone who enjoys the art of driving as it needs to be driven.
We have mentioned throughout this listing that it would suit a life of off road trials as this basic lightweight design is exactly the type of thing that suits that type of competition.
If you're after modern creature comforts then you may wish to keep searching, but if you're after a simple, raw driving experience with basic mechanics, in a car that you can throw around a bit and have some fun in, this could well be the one for you!
