1930 Pontiac Hot Rod

Highlights

∙Custom Built Hot Rod
∙On Display in the London Motor Museum
∙Fitted with a Trans-Am 5.0L V8

The Background

This is not just any old 1930 Pontiac sedan; this is a Hot-Rodded version of the basic Pontiac family car from the 30’s. This means that it has been lowered, put on massive wheels, side exhausts and the key component the massive engine that sides underneath the partially exposed bonnet.

We have all seen Hot-Rods before but here’s a brief history of the hot-rod scene, it started at the end of the second world war when returning GI’s started to use their newly found mechanical skills to tune the now even cheaper Model T Fords and their counterparts. It quickly evolved into the scene that we see today with big engines, big paint jobs and pure noise.

This Pontiac is no exception to the major rules of Hot-Rodding and therefore is a great example.

The History

This car would have started life out in the 30’s as a normal family sedan car but it has obviously departed from its original design. At some point in the past, it has received a lot of time and attention to turn it into this Hot-Rod. During its life it has been displayed at the London Motor Museum which it still wears the name plate for in place of the front number plate.

The Paperwork

Sadly there isn’t any documentation with the Pontiac of the build process or any other type of history. It does come with the V5 which documents 5 previous owners.

The Interior

The interior of this Pontiac is what you expect from an older car, there are only a few dials telling you what you need to know. The door cards and carpet are finished in a bold red colour just so that you cannot miss them, and the seats are more than comfortable enough. The roof of the interior is a little rough and ready, but this allows the next owner to add their own touch.

The entry into this car is on the quirky side, there are no door handles on the exterior, so you have to find the door handle release button within the open engine bay when pressed the doors simply pop open and you can enter.

The Exterior

Finished in matt black with tinted windows this is a sinister looking hot rod, something that will never fail to turn a head. The side exit exhausts also help to set the car off, they also allow the V8 to burble without restriction.

On the exterior you will find custom paint that includes flames retreating back from the exposed engine bay and technical pinstriping on the bonnet and boot that really set off the whole Hot-Rod vibe. You will also see it still wears its London Motor Museum plaque, a place where this car was lucky enough to be on display before it started its new life with the current owner.

The Mechanics

As you can imagine the original part of the Pontiac did not come fitted with a 5.0L engine out of a Trans-am when it was built in 1930. The person who built this car obviously decided that this would be the best engine for the job, and they weren’t wrong with this new engine. It sounds great and pulls like a train.

The Appeal

This is a truly crazy and unique car. The attention that this has received to make it into the car you see today would’ve been enormous as you can imagine. With it having been chosen to be displayed within the London Motor Museum you can see that this is a great example of a Hot-Rod.

The massive 5.0L engine coupled with the side exit exhaust will never fail to raise a smile whenever you dare to poke the throttle. The new owner will get a true head turner of a vehicle that opens up the door to enjoy many different aspects of the Hot-Rod lifestyle whether it is just cruising around or showing it off at car shows. It is a one of a kind and is a great car.
