THE BACKGROUND

Launched in 1994, the second generation Range Rover (known as the P38) had awfully big boots to fill. So Land Rover really went to town on it, significantly upgrading everything from the chassis to the power plants and equipment levels. The end result is an extremely capable all-road luxury vehicle that, at the time, was one of the most technically advanced vehicles in the world.

THE HISTORY

In 1998, 220 Vogue SE specification Range Rovers were built. Although they were all based on the 1998 HSE and were registered as HSEs, in reality they had a significantly different specification and trim level in order to warrant the £53,750 price when new.

Paintwork was restricted to a limited palette of just four hues (White Gold, Epsom Green, Oxford Blue and Rioja Red) with additional colour coding to the bumpers, skirts, sills and door mirrors. White Gold cars had a twin coachline in Green, all others had the same coachline in Gold. Inside, colour coded accents to the leather trim (matched to body colour on all barring White Gold, which featured Green accents), along with extra wooden cabin trim, marked the Vogue SE as special. They’re easily identifiable by their unique specification. As the 1999 model year was introduced just one month later with several revisions, a number of these cars remained unregistered into 1999 – but this makes them all the more unusual as classics today.
This particular model was first registered in April 1999, having been bought by MG Rubber Company in Bingham as a company car. Since then it has had 5 more owners, the last owner having had it since June 2016, and it is currently being cared for by a specialist Range Rover trader. The last owner only decided to let the vehicle go as their health no longer allows them to keep it.

THE PAPERWORK

A large file of documentation comes with the vehicle, including the V5, many years of MOT certificates and all of the original handbooks. The current MOT runs until March 2022 and has only a couple of minor advisories. Along with the excellent full service history, this gives real confidence in the reliability of the car. There are a number of invoices for works carried out, both routine servicing and maintenance. You can see from the paperwork that the vehicle has been well maintained mechanically, and has certainly been someone’s pride and joy. The car also comes with two keys.
The last stamp in the service history is at 119,972 in 2016, so the car has covered less than 1,000 miles a year since 2016.

THE INTERIOR

The P38 has a great interior even in basic specification, but the Vogue SE is anything but basic. Even by the standards of a modern car, the interior is very well specified and extremely comfortable. It features a great colour combination – Lightstone leather with complementary Green piping, Green gear selector and Green handbrake grip. In the foot wells are the original optional rubber mats, and the dash features wood veneer, including the extra areas of veneer around the console, HEVAC controls and ICE system (another feature exclusive to the Vogue SE).
We are assured by the owner that all of the car’s features work exactly as they should. Just some of the features included are: climate control, an original Clarion Diversity radio-cassette with multi-CD changer, a Harmon Kardon sound system, cruise control and heated electric memory seats.
It’s a comfortable, spacious and airy cabin, perfect for arriving unruffled after even a long journey. Naturally, it’s a 22 year old car so there is some wear and tear. Some of the veneer is cracked around the HEVAC controls, the material that covers the A and B pillars has perished and the leather on the front seats has some light cracking. Generally the cabin is in reasonable condition, but is in need of a good valet and leather treatment. It wouldn’t take too much to restore it to an excellent condition.
The boot area and luggage cover are both in good condition, with a full size spare wheel and the original tools still present under the floor.

THE EXTERIOR

This is certainly an eye-catching vehicle. The White Gold paintwork suits the P38 well, and the Vogue SE exclusive Green coach line adds a classy touch. Standard equipment on the Vogue SE included 18” Proline alloy wheels. The wheels are in good condition, as are the front light guards. The car has also been fitted with the later specification headlamps and clear indicators, protected by official accessory light guards – upgrades worth a few hundred on their own. The rear light guards have faded a little, but could easily be repainted.
Overall the vehicle is in very good condition externally. The paint looks good, all the panels are straight and in good condition, and underneath the car everything looks solid with some surface corrosion evident, but certainly no more than should be expected on a vehicle of this age. The iconic split tailgate operates well and is as practical as ever.
In regard to issues a new owner may wish to take care of, there is a small dent on the N/S C-pillar, and some minor scuffs and general age-related wear. There certainly doesn’t appear to be anything that would be of concern to us.

THE MECHANICS

Featuring the range-topping 4,554cc petrol V8 engine fitted with Lucas GEMS engine management, this Range Rover pulls very well, sounds smooth and throaty and offers a healthy 225bhp. The fact it has been so well maintained is a real bonus. Generally, these are great engines when properly cared for, and very capable of running for hundreds of thousands of miles. It’s mated to a ZF 4 speed automatic gearbox which shifts smoothly and perfectly suits the luxurious, unhurried nature of the car.
One of the key features of the P38 was the advanced electronically controlled air suspension, offering a variety of ride heights for everything from serious off-roading to general road use and even a dedicated ‘motorway’ mode, it’s a great system. And in this vehicle it works perfectly, smoothly and quickly raising and lowering at the push of a button. The current keeper also tells us that the front airbags have been replaced recently.
After going for a drive in the car, we can confirm that it goes, steers and stops well. The gearshift is smooth and silent, there are no knocks or vibration from the suspension and the air suspension operates well.

THE APPEAL

This is among the rarest and most sought-after models in the P38 range too. As one of only 220 1998 model Vogue SEs made, it’s an increasingly rare vehicle and one which is less widely-known that the two subsequent Vogue SE limited editions or the later production model. White Gold examples are especially rare, as this colour was not available on any subsequent Vogue SE limited edition.

The car has clearly been loved and well maintained over the years, especially mechanically. Yes, the interior needs a bit of TLC, but everything works as it should and there’s nothing that a good valet and some light restoration wouldn’t quickly solve.
As a way to cross, not just continents, but mountains, fields, swamps, hills, valleys and everything in-between in absolute comfort and luxury, nothing comes close to a Range Rover. The cabin is a very nice place to spend time, comfortable, exceptionally well equipped and very spacious. We would happily take this car on a European road trip with absolutely no qualms at all.
We think this car offers incredible value for money. That syrup-smooth V8 is a gem of an engine, the kind that you simply don’t get in mainstream vehicles any more, and mated to the high specification and full service history of this vehicle we think makes it a very attractive ownership proposition. As an investment it makes real sense too – P38s are increasing in value now, and this is one of the rarest P38s on the planet. With a small amount of work, it could soon be back in excellent condition and would give any new owner many years of luxurious, all-road motoring.
We love this car. It ticks every box you could want it to. Power, go-anywhere ability, massive specification, real exclusivity and a great history. It’s going to make someone a very happy owner…
