The Appeal

Jaguar’s beautiful Mk2 evolved through many iterations but in such illustrious company it is perhaps the Daimler variant that deserves a little more limelight.  The small and smooth Turner V8 beneath the bonnet is arguably one of the best engines of the 1960s and equipped with power steering and automatic gearboxes, the Daimler is one of the easiest Mk2 variants to drive and own.
This lovely Ascot Fawn 250 V8 is one of the last built, registered some months into XJ6 production.  It is an older restoration with many original features and a vast history file that confirms the low mileage.  Practical and stylish with an abundance of surprise and delight features, this highly presentable Daimler looks ready for some summer picnic runs with family and friends.

The History and Paperwork

  • First registered 18th July 1969
  • Current owner since 2015
  • Last MOT expired January 2018 but has covered less than 1,000 miles since
  • Sparing use since 2007, covering less than 4,000 miles
  • Shell professionally stripped and resprayed 10 years ago and recorded in DVD with the car
  • Extensive history file including original handbooks, radio operating instructions and service book with 28 stamps
  • All old MOTs with car
  • 2 sets of keys
  • Original Daimler documents with service chart
  • One of the last of 5,800 RHD V8 250s built, 216th car from the end of production
  • Thick history file of old MOTs

The Interior

  • Original interior in excellent condition, including headlining and boot area
  • Beige carpets appear to be original and in good condition, but with some signs of wear typical of age and mileage
  • Red leather seats, fronts wide, separate ‘bench style’ showing some signs of creasing
  • Correct padded door cappings of the later 250-V8
  • Wear mark on side trim of passenger front seat
  • Rear seat in very good condition with no visible damage
  • Veneer dashboard with later padded finish in good condition, just some light scuffs and hairline cracks visible up close
  • Original two-spoke Bakelite wheel with what appears to be a crack in the right hand spoke
  • Inertia reel front seat belts fitted
  • Boot carpet recently retrimmed at cost of £162 in red vinyl and in good condition
  • Original radio that seller states still works
  • Complete factory tool kit
  • Vinyl door trims in very good condition with good veneers and complete, undamaged chrome fittings

The Exterior

  • Ascot Fawn paintwork believed factory correct and in very good condition
  • Respray documented in a DVD with the car and included stripping to bare metal and repainting, including into the door and panel shuts
  • Older restoration - approximately 10 years - with little use since, showing only very minor deterioration
  • Later slim bumper Mk2 body style
  • Various areas of minor deterioration including weeps of corrosion at the base of the nearside rear spat, at the front and rear of the bonnet guttering on the nearside, inside the boot lid lip and stone chips on the inner edge of the offside front wheel arch
  • Rear doors are original and all door bottoms, a traditional Mk2 weak spot, are very good with original factory drainage channels visible
  • Good fit across the panels on either side, in particular the door gaps and shut lines
  • Good chromework appears original, just a light patina of age and some minor tarnishing on the bumpers
  • Underside of the car is in very good condition including all-important crows feet and jacking points

The Mechanics

  • 142bhp 2548cc Turner-designed Daimler V8
  • Three-speed automatic gearbox with column shift
  • Extensive service history including book with 28 stamps
  • Replacement gearbox fitted at 51,952 miles in 1978
  • Stainless steel exhaust fitted at 69,000 miles
  • Power steering system reconditioned, new prop shaft bearing and front brakes overhaul also at 69,000 miles
  • Rear brake overhaul at 72,000 miles
  • Invoices for work since 2015 totalling nearly £6,000
  • Full oil service recently completed

Summary

The Mk2 is the classic British saloon that seems to have it all.  Beautiful, blessed with a  carefully detailed interior and with space for several passengers, it is no surprise that values continue to rise.  Yet the Daimler-badged version continues to represent great value for money and also provides that lovely V8 and the practicality of power steering.
This low mileage, much-historied late 250-V8 has been comprehensively restored and little used but carefully stored since.  It looks highly presentable and almost tailor-made for weekend runs to the seaside or countryside with family and friends.
