1965 Ford Mustang Convertible ‘C code’ 289ci V8

Highlights

  • Very early ‘C code’ car
  • Full restoration project
  • Looks to be complete
  • All import duties and VAT paid
  • EU import documentation

The Appeal

The early first generation Mustangs are truly superb vehicles. With a meaty V8 drivetrain, before Ford started to add weight and strangle the engines in the early 70s, they really are a delightful and surprisingly fleet-footed machine.
What we have here is a very early ‘C code’ convertible Mustang. That means this was factory fitted with the 289ci two-barrel V8, offering a chunky 200hp – more than enough in what is, in reality, quite a small car.
With the attractive prospect of classic American V8 motoring and ‘million miles of sky’ views, this restoration project should surely be on the radar of anyone looking for a project this winter…

The History and Paperwork

  • 1965 ‘C code’ vehicle
  • US title documents
  • EU import documentation
  • Full restoration project

The Interior

  • White vinyl upholstery to the seats, dashboard and door cards will all require restoration
  • The driver’s seat squab is quite badly torn
  • Black carpets run through the cabin and appear to be quite heavily worn
  • Instruments and controls appear to be complete, but will require some restoration to all items
  • It appears as it the majority of the trim is present, but it will require refurbishment
  • Boot floor appears to be nice and solid
  • Full-size spare wheel

The Exterior

  • Black paintwork is dulled and damaged with age and would benefit from being refreshed
  • The original black fabric hood has completely perished, although the frame appears to be intact
  • As far as we can see, the majority of the external trim and brightwork is present, but will need some refurbishment or replacement
  • The driver’s side front indicator unit is missing
  • All of the glass appears to be in good condition and undamaged
  • Steel wheels with chrome wheel covers, which appear to be in nice condition
  • Underneath the car looks to be fair, although is likely to require some remedial work
  • The sills appear to be nice, with no signs of major corrosion

The Mechanics

  • 289ci (4,727cc) ‘Windsor’ two-barrel V8, offering 200bhp and 282lb-ft to the rear wheels when new
  • Three-speed automatic transmission
  • It should be noted that the car does not start and will need mechanical recommissioning
  • The engine bay looks quite tidy, with some new hoses and leads clearly having been fitted at some time, although most items have a layer of surface corrosion

Summary

If you’re after a good size project to see you through the winter months, we think this is a cracker. As an early ‘C code’ car, this is a desirable machine. With the added attraction of this being a convertible, it makes a great case for itself.
Why not build the Mustang you’ve always dreamed of and spend some glorious summer evenings cruising into the sunset, top down, V8 burbling and not a care in the world…
