THE BENTELY CONTINENTAL GT
The groundbreaking Bentley Continental GT of 2003 was one of the first Bentley models designed and built under Volkswagen ownership. It marked a dramatic change of policy for Bentley; although still hand assembled to a degree, it was built using mass-production techniques and retailed at approximately half the price of the preceding Continental R, extending the prospect of Bentley ownership so a much wider market. While to some traditionalists it seemed like a back-step the Continental GT saved Bentley and assured a stable future.
The Continental GT was powered by a twin-turbocharged version of the 6. 0-litre W12 engine, also found in other VW Group products, driving all four wheels via a six-speed semi-automatic gearbox. With 552bhp on tap, this mighty power unit was capable of propelling the two-ton Continental GT to 100km/ h (62mph) in 4. 8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 318km/ h (197mph). Soon the GT spawned the four-door Flying Spur and open-air GTC.
By 2018, the Continental GT entered its third generation following myriad special editions, updates, and facelifts. The latest iteration had familiar, yet dramatically reworked styling, with a wider, lower, and more muscular appearance. A V8 engine had joined the line, and was a popular choice among buyers, but the mighty 6-liter W12 remained the king of the hill. It would be the final time buyers could opt for this engine, as the new Continental introduced for the 2024 model year would be V8 only.
THE CAR OFFERED
Representing the final year for Bentley's magnificent twin-turbo W12 engine in the Continental is this striking open-air 2023 Continental GTC Speed 12 a limited commemorative edition sending off the twelve in style. This car, ordered new by the owner of The Orange Collection from Bentley of Naples, is offered here with just 2, 160 miles recorded at the time of writing. Of course, a special color is necessary for this special collection, and this car is finished in Mulliner Velocity Orange Pearlescent paint over a black interior with mandarin accents.
Options are, of course, extensive and totaled over $100, 000. Notable selections include carbon ceramic brakes, Mulliner Colour Specification and paint, high gloss carbon fiber, Touring Specification, Comfort front seats, 22-inch 10-spoke wheels, and numerous other personalized details. Sparingly used since joining the collection, it is presented in superb order that is reflective of its low mileage.
With 650bhp on tap, the plush, opulent Speed 12 certainly lives up to its name hitting 203mph and a sub-4 second sprint to 60mph. As muscular as it is elegant, the Continental GTC Speed 12 is indeed a spectacular final farewell to the legendary W12.
