Here at John Brown 4×4 HQ, whilst we adore our “bread and butter” work of Series Land Rovers® in the original format and guises, we do often like to give our staff the opportunity to “let their hair down” and refurbish a Series Land Rover® in a spec of their choosing. These are usually one-off special editions, and that is exactly what this 1963 Series 2 is – the John Brown 4×4 “NARDO” Edition 001. When we carry out these builds, they usually get a host of desirable extras and interesting features & this one is no different… read on below!

Externally, this 1963 Series 2a is presented in Truck Cab format, with open back. The bodywork is finished in Nardo Grey inside and out (hence the name of the edition). If the truck cab format doesn’t suit you – we can of course remodel this truck as a full soft/ hard top for you at a small surcharge – and we even have a sand tonneau cover for the rear, should you want to keep the rear dry for stowing items. Everywhere you look, those with a keen eye can see the upgrades over standard – the front and rear mud flaps, the complete set of uprated LED lights with clear lenses and our newest option… those stunning DRL “Halo” headlights which provide much brighter headlights during night driving than standard and also look great when out and about with the Halo illuminated! Other options include a height adjustable tow bar with electrics, a rear step for access whilst loading items, door mounted mirrors for extra visiblity whilst driving, steel modular wheels with spacers for that aggressive stance, colour coded black bumper and roof and a SwingAway rear carrier with a matching spare tyre should it be needed. This also has our “endurance” pack with an extra space-saver emergency bonnet spare so you don’t have to worry about punctures on long trips away.

The inside of these truck cabs is their real USP – it is a much more secure cabin which fully locks, quieter as there is less reverberation than a hard top, and also a much smaller area which to heat, meaning no suffering in the cold winter – it gets so warm in there you’ll need to switch it off… not something we can often say. A pair of re-trimmed high back seats with modern interia belts is fitted, so you can plug in and go – a large central cubby box is fitted for storing items out of sight, with it also having a tray in which to store your phone or sunglasses whilst driving.. very handy. The interior benefits from a deluxe interior carpeting set which includes door cards – further dampening the noise intrusion. It is also fantastic to see that the rear sliding windows of the truck cab roof are operational and this can revolutionise things in several ways…. carrying something you don’t want to share the cabin with? Keep the windows shut. Fancy popping a pair of benches in the back, or a 3/ 4 canvas on (we can supply both these items for you) – when you do have people back there you can open these windows to benefit from conversation and heat… it just gives the driver far more choice, in our opinion than every other format… I’ll admit as the writer of this advert, given my own Series is also a truck cab, that perhaps I am somewhat biased – but those “in the know” will hopefully agree with my perspective. Our shop truck is also a truck cab for the very reasons above, so we are well versed in the many benefits they provide. The rear of this truck cab is currently fitted with a rubberised load mat to protect the floor along a set of tailgate chains which have waterproof covers to prevent wear and corrosion as well as remove any irritating rattles when driving.

Out on the road is where this Series 2a really shines though – the petrol engine with added Weber Carb and larger wheels and tyres mean longer gears, more relaxed cruising and a higher top speed without compromising acceleration unduly. Parabolic Springs with pro-comp shocks mean the best possible ride is afforded to the occupants and means one relishes the opportunity to “attack” speed bumps rather than actively avoiding them. Those larger wheels and tyres give a more commanding driving position too, whilst those LED lights mean not only better reliability but also far better vision at night – those who have only experienced sealed beam or halogen type lights would never be able to tolerate them again after one evening driving with these lights… you can actually dazzle other road users on full beam… unheard of in a Series Land Rover® of any age! The looks also mean lots of positive attention is afforded to the driver – you get more attention than almost anything on the road, particularly in town and the city as photographed. Of course, due to the larger tyres with that modern tread pattern, it is also superior off-road should you need to use it as a workhorse towing a trailer across a field.

In summary then, if you like the idea of a Classic Land Rover®, but you don’t want to have something in original period format, whilst benefitting from knowing you have a 001 special edition from JB 4×4 HQ, then this could be for you. We do not get to build as many of these as we’d like due to time constraints and standard stock demand – but when we do, not only do we find they look the business… but also that they have a far superior drive which when one considers there is no tax to pay and no MOT required – this becomes a really exciting prospect for a new keeper, without the hassle and expense of keeping up with modern regulations. At the risk of repeating ourselves – should this be for you but the truck cab format won’t suit your needs – drop us a line – we’d be happy to help and even have a black canvas to “complete” the look in soft top format, if you want to go that way!
