Unlike the vast majority of Britain's motorcycle manufacturers, which were located in the Birmingham and Coventry areas, Matchless were based in Plumstead, South London. The name 'Matchless' first appeared in the 1890s on cycles manufactured by H H Collier, whose sons Charlie and Harry would later join him in the business. The firm's first - experimental - motorcycle appeared in 1899 and its first production model in 1902.

In its 1929 catalogue, Matchless described the Model R/ S as follows: "Although the smallest of the 'Matchless' range, the Model 'R/ S' has ample power for solo or pillion riding on any roads, is graceful and attractive in appearance, steers perfectly, and, above all, possesses in full measure 'Matchless' reliability."

This example of Matchless's charming '250' lightweight comes with an old-style continuation logbook (issued 1956) listing our vendor as '1st Change' in 1963, the previous owner listed, a Mr Arthur Luke, having owned the machine since 1942. The Matchless was restored by the vendor around 50 years ago, including a rebore and new piston, and has acquired a charming patina of age. Not used for some time, the machine will require some light recommissioning before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. It comes with an old-style V5C document; an original Matchless Model R/ S Instruction Book and Spare Parts List; and the aforementioned logbook.

All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
