After the workers' sit-in from 1973 to 1975, Triumph began to manufacture bikes on a commercial scale once again, and ultimately, the Meriden workers' cooperative, as it became, was able to market its own machines after NVT hit severe problems in 1976/ 77. As so many modern motorcycles are now made in 'Limited Editions', it is hard to imagine that the term was virtually unheard of in 1977 when the Triumph Silver Jubilee Bonneville was announced, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne. One thousand were made for the UK, with the same for the USA, plus some for other countries. Each machine was finished in a special silver, red, white and blue colour scheme, with chrome plated outer engine covers, and a certificate of ownership in the buyer's name.
This Silver Jubilee was purchased new by the present owner, from Charles Freeman Motorcycles of High Street, Eckington, Sheffield on 23rd August 1977, and was started briefly only once, when it was collected, but has never since been started, ridden, used, or registered for the road. It has been kept on display inside the owner's house in perfect, heated conditions. The owner had the hydraulic fluid drained from the braking system, and fuel removed, prior to it being placed on display.
When collected from the supplying dealer, and also when consigned to the Stafford sale, it had only 7 delivery miles recorded on its odometer. Should a new owner wish to use the machine on the road, it will require commissioning/ re-commissioning before taking to the road.
Documentation comprises the original owner's handbook, a V55/ 3 form to apply for registration, an original 1977 Silver Jubilee sales brochure, and a 1978 Triumph sales brochure all within the original Triumph envelope addressed to the vendor. Also present is the certificate of ownership (now framed and glazed) and the original tool kit. An increasingly rare opportunity to acquire a Silver Jubilee Bonneville in totally original and effectively brand-new condition. Offered with key.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
