Lot 360
1967 BSA 350cc B40
Registration no. YNP 557
Frame no. B40GB1028
Engine no. B40GB1028
This ex-Army BSA was purchased in 1973 at an Army Surplus auction. This model is much sought after by Pre-'65 trials and scrambles riders: the engine has the Victor bottom-end with end-fed crankshaft and roller-bearing big-end; it also has the wide-ratio, stub-tooth gearbox. The frame is the all-welded type and is fitted with two-way damped forks. Difficult to keep in tune, the original Amal 396 butterfly carburettor has been swapped for a Monobloc.
'YNP 557' has been in the same family's possession since purchase. It was used regularly by the vendor to attend trials, scrambles and road race meetings, including several trips the Isle of Man TT and MGP. It was also used for the National Rally and for days out and occasional commuting. Health problems stopped the vendor riding in the late 1980s. The BSA was then used for a few years by his nephew. It was then dry stored until the owner - an engineer by trade with a well equipped workshop - commenced its restoration. Too lengthy to reproduce here, a full description of the restoration is on file.
Included in the sale are the original sales documents from the aforementioned auction; the Army owner's manual; old MoTs and tax discs; wiring diagrams; The Motor Cycle magazine's test report; a current V5C; and a CD of copies of the Army workshop manual and parts list.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
