1934 Brough Superior 18568
Registration no. ATO 642
Frame no. 8/ 1440
Engine no. LTZ/ D 40261/ SE
• Highly original (matching frame, engine, fuel tank)
• Present family ownership since 1969
• Unused since acquisition
• Offered for recommissioning/ restoration

This Brough Superior 11-50 was sold new to one L E Davies, who part-exchanged his 1931 SS80. Completed as a solo, 'ATO 642' was registered by the Works prior to its collection by Mr Davies on 22nd September 1934. Issued on 11th May 1956, the old-style RF. 60 continuation logbook on file lists four owners (three in Derbyshire), while Brough Superior Club records list a Mr J McKay of Stockport as owner in 1966, although he appears not to have registered the machine. This logbook shows that the Brough was now attached to a sidecar.

The last owner listed is the current vendor's late stepfather, who purchased the Brough in 1969 from Wymac Ltd in Stockport. The original purchase receipt for £100 is on file (Wymac's address is the same as that of Mr McKay). From the Works Record Card (copy on file) it can be seen that 'ATO 642' retains its original numbered frame, engine, and fuel tank, and very likely the forks too, while the Sturmey-Archer gearbox, although not original, has been changed for a 1933 unit of the correct type. The machine also comes with an old-style V5 registration document and a letter from Brough Superior Club Machine Registrar Mike Leatherdale.

Our vendor advises us that the Brough has never been used/ run since its acquisition and has been in storage since purchased in 1969. The machine passed to the current vendor when his stepfather passed away in 2001. Not being a motorcyclist, the vendor feels now is the right time to part with the Brough. Following an extended period of inactivity, the machine will require re-commissioning, or possibly more extensive restoration, before returning to the road and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Prospective purchasers must satisfy themselves with regard to the machine's mechanical condition prior to bidding. It should also be noted that the kick start lever is missing and both the '8/' frame number prefix and 'LTZ/ D' '/ SE' engine number prefix/ suffix have been omitted from both the old V5 and RF. 60.

It should be noted that a VCAR marker is recorded on the HPI database against the VIN '1440' on 6th February 2013. Bonhams is unable to verify the status of this marker as the description of the vehicle is listed as 'Other UK' (which may not relate to this vehicle); therefore, prospective bidders must satisfy themselves and conduct their own due diligence prior to bidding.

All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
