In October 2016, the Mahindra Group of India bought the rights to the BSA brand for £3. 4 million. Some five years later, in late 2021, Mahindra announced a new model developed in Birmingham, England, to be made in India: this was the 'Gold Star', named after the iconic 1950s/ 1960s original and with similar styling, although powered by a 652cc liquid-cooled engine rather than the original's air-cooled 350/ 500 unit. Testing the new Goldie for Bike magazine's April 2023 edition, John Westlake reckoned: "The BSA is the perfect device for pottering down country lanes with the scenery sliding gently by and the single-cylinder motor chuffing away like a distant steam engine from a bygone age." Which, of course, is just what the target market wanted.
Supplied by Dearden Motorcycles in Southampton, this example is believed to have covered under 600 miles but the mileage total could not be verified as the battery is currently drained. The machine is offered with a V5C document (showing new at purchase); owner's manual; purchase invoice for £7, 300; and the Warranty and Service booklet showing the first service at 535 miles on 3rd October 2023 (invoice on file). Following a period of inactivity this motorcycle will require careful recommissioning before returning to the road. Two keys present.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
