c. 1951 New Hudson 98cc Autocycle
Registration no. not registered
Frame no. unable to locate
Engine no. 176B36010
The 1951 New Hudson 98cc Autocycle was a lightweight, practical motorized bicycle produced by New Hudson Ltd, a Birmingham-based manufacturer. Designed as an affordable mode of transport, it featured a 98cc two-stroke Villiers engine, which delivered modest power and efficiency, making it ideal for urban commuting. The autocycle had pedal-assisted starting, a single-speed transmission, and a simple frame with basic suspension. New Hudson's autocycles were popular in post-war Britain, catering to riders seeking economical mobility. The curved fuel tank, minimalist mudguards, and low seat height contributed to its classic aesthetic. Though lacking in speed and power compared to motorcycles, it provided reliable transport for workers and everyday commuters. New Hudson continued producing autocycles until 1957, after which the brand was absorbed by BSA.
Found by the vendors late father languishing in the back of a farmers shed, he set about restoring it and even went as far as remaking the tinware side panels from scratch! Presented in restored condition, it will need recommissioning to a greater or lesser extent before returning to the road but the engine does turn over. Offered without documents.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams Motorcycles website for all pertinent auction information.
