The 1925 Matchless 591cc Model M is a classic British motorcycle that holds a significant place in the history of motorcycling. Introduced in 1924, the Model M was only part of the Matchless range until 1928, and is a rare specimen in the present day. Matchless were renowned for engineering quality and performance; the 591cc engine of this particular model delivered a smooth ride, and its three-speed gearbox provides a reliable yet simple gear-changing experience, which is characteristic of the time. This Banbury-eligible Model M, with registration number DP 6246, has been kept on display in a small private collection. The machine is believed to have undergone restoration at some point, although the details of when and by whom remain unknown. It was acquired for the collection in 2019, where it has remained on static display. The engine turns over, and the gearbox selects all three speeds, whilst the bike was started approximately six months ago, due to its period of inactivity, the new owner will need to undertake re-commissioning and safety checks before putting it back on the road. Prospective purchasers should note that the V5C lists the engine capacity as 500cc, although the Model M in 1925 was produced with a capacity of 591cc. Accordingly, it is thought that the capacity on the V5C may result from a past clerical error, but prospective purchasers should satisfy themselves as to the correct cylinder capacity prior to bidding. Acetylene front and rear lights and a generator are fitted, but no connecting pipes are present. Documents comprise a current V5C, and sundry papers. Key not required.
