We love to bring a bus to the market that ticks all the boxes, but this is becoming increasingly more difficult these days. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to acquire something incredible special in all departments.
This is a German built, Factory Right Hand Drive supplied T1 Split Screen Bus. The story goes that some back packers from the UK used it to travel across Australia in the 00s and had the trip of a lifetime. It performed so well that they established a special bond with the bus and decided to bring it back to the UK with them on their return.
The vehicle eventually changed hands and underwent enormous restoration with no expense spared. My experience with Australian buses has always been extremely positive, primarily because the difference in climate lends itself to a far easier restoration. In other words, a lot less work compared to a UK bus that’s suffered 55+ years of harsh climate and rust. It means that the buses main shell and structure presents much more originally as per the factory intention further increasing desirability.
Right Hand Drive is of course a luxury as roughly only 10% of buses were built in this format and most of which are no longer on the road due to reasons aforementioned.
Well known VW Specialists T2 Detectives built the mechanical specification for the bus with meticulous detail and bills alone for this amount to around £17, 000. This bus is without doubt one of the very best I have ever driven. The mechanical spec of the vehicle includes but is not limited to:
• IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) conversion allowing for a much smoother ride quality using superior and later design and also allowing for higher top end speeds.
• Dropped Spindles at front to match ride height and improve suspension.
• Steering rack conversion / upgrade from steering box.
• Dual circuit brake system, Front Disc Brakes and VW Brake Servo install. This alone is several thousand pounds today to fit and the difference is almost unbelievable in terms of performance and of course additional safety.
• 1600cc Twin Port reconditioned engine running dual carburettors. Provides plenty of power compared to factory spec and slightly increased fuel economy. Recent complete fuel line replacement and new fuel pressure regulator.
• Upgraded exhaust system
• 12V Wiring Loom and electrics.
• Leisure battery & split charge relay kit.
• 240v hookup and internal 13a power sockets.
• Propex Gas Heater (to keep you warm when camping)
• Seat belts front & rear.
• Engine bay fire suppression system.
The bus has been stripped back and fully repainted in one of the all-time favourite early VW colour schemes, Mango Green / White. The paintwork presents superbly throughout and has been machine polished to a mirror like finish. The underside of the bus presents equally well having been on our ramps for inspection.
The bus also benefits from a custom interior and detailed internal finishes including a brand new Madmatz Sisal carpet set (March 2025). Fully re-upholstered throughout in Coffee / Beige vinyl in keeping with the factory styling of a Mango bus. This is one of the all-time favourite colour combinations on a split screen.
The interior features custom cabinetry with rear facing seating and a pull-down rock n roll bed acting as a three person forward facing seat also. The bus could potentially carry 8 people including the driver. There is no cooker or fridge right at the moment but as we specialise in the build / installation of bespoke interiors in these buses, this is something that could be added upon request if desired. There is also always the option of adding an awning to increase sleeping space. We have some great options regarding this that we would be happy to discuss with you.
We are also able to install various style of pop top roofs if required.
There is also an enormous list of further expensive extras including Banjo Steering Wheel, Deluxe Waste line external trim, Safari pop-out windows front and rear, Retrosounds radio & speakers (looks period but with modern features), Extra-large 5 bow stainless steel roof rack. There is several thousand pounds here on just these items alone.
Prior to our acquisition the bus has most recently been owned by a long time VW enthusiast and existing customer of ours who has had it maintained meticulously throughout his ownership. The bus has always been garaged locally to us.
