Recent decades have seen remarkable growth in the cottage industry of specialist firms offering performance upgrades for Land Rover's iconic Defender. One of the foremost and most highly respected of such firms is JE Motorworks (formerly JE Engineering), which had been established as far back as 1975 by John Eales, earning itself a considerable reputation for performance enhancing work with the Rover V8 engine. Interviewed for Autocar magazine (1st April 2017), managing director and chief engineer Jonathan Douglas said: "... the Defender was a constant for us. There was a call for ECU tuning on TD5s, but now we start with suspension and braking upgrades and move up through automatic gearbox conversions and V8 engine conversions. Finally, there's the fully converted Zulu."
This Land Rover Defender was purchased by the vendors circa 2012/ 2013, by which time JE Engineering had already converted it to Zulu specification, complete with a Jaguar 4. 2-litre V8 engine and automatic transmission. Upon acquisition the Zulu underwent an overhaul with new Recaro seats, respray, new front grille, new side steps, and significant work on the engine. This restoration was carried out over a five-year period. The vendors replaced the exhaust system in 2014.
More recently, in 2020, JE Motorworks carried out further work on the engine at a cost of circa £5, 500. In 2024 the bodywork was resprayed, while the interior likewise benefits from recent refurbishment. JE's engine-related bills are available but the vendors have been unable to locate bills relating to the works carried out in 2013. Documentation dating from 2018 onwards is on file, including the vehicle's MoT history and a reasonably comprehensive list of parts purchased and works carried out. Finished in green with black interior, this extensively upgraded defender displays a total of 61, 550 miles on the odometer and is currently MoT'd. Offered with a V5C document.
