Lot 161
1968 Marcos 1600 GT Competition Coupé
Registration no. XGF 164G
Chassis no. 5229
Marine plywood chassis, glassfibre bodywork
Prepared for racing with the HSCC
Ford 'crossflow' engine
Recommissioned in 2021
Present ownership since 2022
This 1968 Marcos 1600 GT has the later Ford 'crossflow' engine, a simple but highly effective powerplant for which every conceivable tuning part is available thanks to its extensive use in motor sport. The reconditioned unit in this car is fitted with twin 40 DCOE Weber carburettors and a four-branch tubular exhaust manifold.
The previous enthusiast owner bought the Marcos in 2008 specifically to race with the HSCC, although he only got around to racing it at Snetterton and Oulton Park during the 2009 season. Pushed to the back of the workshop and dry stored, the car was retrieved and recommissioned in 2021. The recommissioning included fully overhauling and re-jetting the carburettors and renewing the entire ignition system. The Marcos was sold to the current vendor in April 2022.
The car comes with the original Marcos handbook and workshop manual; old tax discs and MoT certificates; a selection of historic photographs; a current V5C Registration Certificate; and a quantity of invoices dating back many years, highlights of which include the following parts and work; AP clutch; competition master cylinder; engine rebuild for £1, 615; wheel bearings; front brake calipers; rear wheel cylinders; water pump; and Yokohama tyres.
Other notable features include 13 Minilite wheels; plumbed-in fire extinguisher; full roll cage; four-point Securon racing harnesses; adjustable pedal box; an impressive array of Smiths instruments; and Aeroquip hydraulic flexi-pipes throughout. The marine ply chassis is in excellent condition (no woodworm!) and the glassfibre bodywork presents well, although close inspection reveals some micro-blistering in places. Representing a relatively low cost entry into Historic motor sport, this beautiful Marcos would be welcome in numerous race series and/ or sprints and hill climbs, or could be enjoyed as an exciting road car.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams|Cars website for all pertinent auction information.
