Volkswagen's iconic Type 2 commercial vehicle was built is a wide variety of guises, the 'Double-door Walk-through' Camper Van being one of the rarest and most sought after; indeed, the example offered here is believed to be one of only three remaining. Importantly, the M-Code plate confirming its specification is still in situ.
A 1965 model, this particular Type 2 was completed on 26th August 1964 and exported new to San Francisco, USA with the rare combination of a walk through from driver cab to main body, and also double side barn doors. On its arrival, EZ Campers of Little Rock, California installed a bespoke interior, and the vehicle was then sold through the local Volkswagen dealership. EZ's front steps, an exceptionally rare feature, are still in place.
Having spent most of its life in the Sacramento area prior to a period of inactivity, the Type 2 was purchased by Vintage Warehouse, a company specialising in rare and unusual Volkswagens. During their ownership the 'pop-top' and double-bunk roof were installed. Photographs of it appearing at 'Tent Day' photo shoots are on file.
In 2005 the VW was imported into the UK where it was owned by the immediately preceding keeper for some 12 years. While in their ownership the Camper was treated to a no-expense-spared restoration by Volksworld show-winners Haywood Classic & Custom. The 1, 600cc engine is a 'new-old-stock' twin-port with single carburettor and points ignition. It was purchased from the Volkswagen factory in Mexico and installed in 2008 together with all new ancillaries: fuel pump, uprated alternator, etc. In 2016 the gearbox was overhauled by Bears Motor Sport UK, while the brakes have been uprated with discs at the front.
The interior has been upgraded with teak and marine-ply woodwork, professionally installed and French polished, while show-winning specialists Bernard Newbury Auto Interiors retrimmed the leather upholstery. The electrics have been completely rewired and an Eberspacher heater installed. Great attention was paid to insulation and sound deadening, and with its EZ bed and double bunk beds, the Camper sleeps four people comfortably. A photographic record of the rebuild and related invoices totalling approximately £50, 000 are on file. Our vendor purchased the VW at a UK auction in 2017, since when it has been used sparingly, remaining in excellent overall condition.
Finished in the attractive colour combination of Agave Green with Silver White roof, this stunning and ultra-rare Camper Van is offered with its Volkswagen delivery certificate (options listed); a number of expired MoTs; a current UK V5C Registration Certificate; and the aforementioned bills and photographs. Closer inspection is highly recommended.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams|Cars website for all pertinent auction information.
