Conceived in the late 1950s and launched in 1962, the MGB would turn out to be one of the most successful sports cars of all time. Attractively styled, cheap to run and easily maintained by the home mechanic, the 'B' carried on MG's traditional role of providing affordable, open-top, sports car motoring for the ordinary enthusiast. Its popularity remaining undiminished today, the classic MGB is one of the easiest sports cars of its era to run and maintain in the 21st Century, being served by a worldwide industry of spare parts and service providers. They are also immensely popular in modern Historic racing, being easy to drive, relatively cheap to run, and eligible for numerous race series.

This MGB was built by MG Motorsport and bought by the vendor to enter the Cento Ore and Spa 6 hours, both of which events it completed successfully. Since then the car has been stored as part of a private collection and used for only one race with Equipe and one race with CSCC. A number of improvements have been made to the 'B', and in 2023 it was completely overhauled to reduce weight, which included a respray (it now weighs 1, 268kg).

The shell is an original MGB featuring an original glassfibre hardtop, aluminium bonnet, and an 80-litre fuel tank with external quick filler. Displacing 1, 854cc, the rebuilt engine breathes through a Weber 48DCOE and incorporates a Peter Burgess large-bore head, MGM5A camshaft, Arrow con-rods, JE pistons, a lightened flywheel. and a competition clutch. The gearbox has a reverse gear lock out. A Tillet seat is fitted and the car also comes with two Ridgard seats suitable for non-FIA events or training. There is also a spare set of five Minilite wheels with 13 Avon tyres and five spare Dunlop L-section tyres in addition to those on the car. This FIA MGB has been well maintained and is reported as always very reliable; it is road legal and has one of the works style numbers. Accompanying documentation includes some history; sundry bills for race preparation, FIA papers; and a current V5C Registration Certificate.

All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams|Cars website for all pertinent auction information.
