Lot 119
1960 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL Convertible with Hardtop
Registration no. 867 UYL
Chassis no. 121042-10-018216
Delivered new in Europe
Left-hand drive
Restored circa 2014
Based on the 180 saloon, whose all-independently-suspended running gear it used, the 190 SL entered production in January 1955. Mounted on a detachable subframe along with the four-speed manual gearbox, front suspension and steering, the power unit was a 1, 897cc overhead-camshaft four - the first such engine ever to feature in a Mercedes-Benz. Breathing through twin Solex downdraft carburettors, the M121 unit produced 105bhp, an output sufficient to propel the 190 SL to 60mph in 13 seconds and to a top speed of 107mph. Its superior refinement and ease of use made model a huge hit in the USA, where many of the slightly fewer than 26, 000 produced between 1955 and 1963 found homes. The 190 SL remains a sought-after car to this day, and one that unquestionably cuts a fine figure.
The copy Mercedes-Benz data card on file confirms that this matching numbers left-hand drive Mercedes-Benz 190 SL convertible was delivered on 15th September 1960 finished in the unusual all-black livery, and, a Becker Europa radio, and Hirschmann antenna.
In 2014 the Mercedes was purchased from VD Classic Cars in Belgium. The London-based new owner then embarked upon a restoration to bring the car to its current very high standard. Our vendor purchased the car for his private collection in 2015 and has enjoyed using it, albeit sparingly since. During the current ownership the car has been meticulously maintained and regularly serviced by marque experts (bills on file) including sympathetic upgrades such as an electric fuel pump. This also included removing and reconditioning the original Solex carburettors, which were substituted for the more usable Weber versions, which remain on the car.
The original, rebuilt Solex carburettors are included as part of this sale for refitting if the new owner wishes. A move abroad is the private owner's reason for the sale. Offered complete with hardtop, and presented in excellent overall condition, this beautiful 190 SL comes with a file of documentation to include various old MoTs; copy Netherlands registration papers; the aforementioned copy data card; a current UK V5C Registration Certificate; and 190 SL owner's manual.
All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams|Cars website for all pertinent auction information.
