“Hot hatchbacks were all the rage in the 1980s. Some were no more than tepid dynamically, others were pretty warm. A few, though, were almost too hot to handle. One such car, an icon of its age, was the second-generation 5 GT Turbo...” - Eric Dymock, The Renault File.

Introduced in February 1985, the original Renault 5 GT Turbo used what, even by the standards of the day, would seem an unpromising engine for a sporting car. A 1. 4-litre 8-valve pushrod four, the 5 GT's engine punched well above its weight thanks to Renault's turbocharging technology, a spin-off from the French manufacturer's successful Formula 1 programme. Fed by an inter-cooled Garrett T2 turbocharger, it produced a healthy maximum of 115bhp, endowing the 5 GT Turbo with an excellent power-to-weight ratio enabling it to accelerate from a standstill to 60mph in 7. 2 seconds. Top speed was in the region of 127mph.

The engine was equipped with an oil cooler, and fuel tank capacity increased. Suspension upgrades included lowered ride height; a new 'four-bar' linkage at the rear; and a wider track. The car's steering was faster than the regular cars and there were disc brakes all round, with ventilated rotors at the front, while wider aluminium wheels were similar to those of the Renault Alpine V6 GT. Plastic side skirts differentiated the GT Turbo from the regular Renault 5.

A face-lifted second-generation 5 GT Turbo was launched in 1987. Major changes to this new version included a water-cooled turbocharger and a new ignition system that permitted higher revs. The result was an increase in maximum output to 118bhp. Externally, there was a new body kit that marginally reduced the car's drag coefficient. A new interior arrived for 1989. In late 1991, the iconic Renault 5 GT Turbo was discontinued, superseded by the Clio16V and Clio Williams.

This right-hand drive Renault 5 GT Turbo was the subject to a restoration several years ago and comes with the associated bills. A one-owner-from-new example, the car has covered fewer than 70, 000 miles and has been in storage for the last three years. Recommissioning will be required before further use. Offered with a V5C document.

All lots are sold 'as is/ where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Visit the Bonhams|Cars website for all pertinent auction information.
