Vehicle history:
In March 1934, Fiat presented the first engine with overhead valves for a production car: The new engine (type 108 CS) for the open 2-seater sports car Fiat 508 S Balilla Sport, model 1934. At the same time, the Spider also got the new 4-speed gearbox, which also made it competitive for mountainous race tracks.
This Balilla was purchased from a museum in Switzerland by the current owner in 1982. After the purchase, he delved deeper into the history of this model. He discovered that there had been a race in Germany in the past in which ten Fiat 508s had taken first place in classification group VI. This race was called “2000 Kilometer durch Deutschland” (“2000 kilometers through Germany”) at the time. The fastest Fiat reached an average speed of 81. 6 km/ h on public roads in 1934. Spurred on by the desire for racing success with his new acquisition, the current owner of this vehicle organized a new edition of the “2000 Kilometer durch Deutschland” race. This new edition became the most successful rally for classic cars of the 1990s.
