The French flag was waved by Jean-Marie Balestre, then director of the FFSA, at the start of the most legendary of endurance races, the Le Mans 24 Hours. Among the 55 cars taking part, the public noticed an astonishing BMW 3. 0 CSL, sporting an incredible livery. It was driven by legendary auctioneer Hervé Poulain, a gentleman driver in his own right, who commissioned the artist Alexander Calder, renowned for his revolutionary mobiles set in motion by the air, to paint the car. Although the adventure ended on the 7th lap, the Art Car movement was born... Peter Klasen, born in 1935, is a German artist associated with the New Figuration and Narrative Figuration movements. His work is characterised by a visual critique of industrial society, using elements drawn from advertising, industrial signage and medical images to explore themes of alienation and human isolation. Klasen, a graduate of the Berlin University of the Arts, often combines photography, painting and found objects in complex compositions that question the relationship between technology and humanity. His work provokes reflection on the impact of modernity on the individual, making him an important voice in European contemporary art. Since the late 1990s, Peter Klasen has produced a handful of Art Car works, including two racing Porsches (a GT2 from 1998 and a 911 from 1965), two Ferraris and... a Tesla S. This Ferrari 328 GTS was commissioned around 2010 by a French gallery owner with a passion for Mecanic Art. Delivered new to France in April 1986 via Pozzi, this desirable 328 GTS had very few owners before being acquired by a gallery to give free rein to Peter Klasen's imagination and genius. With a total of just under 120, 000 km (odometer changed at 85, 000 km, invoice on file), this Ferrari has benefited from regular servicing (service book present), including a major overhaul with replacement of the timing belts in 2021, by the Paris Londres Automobiles garage in Gentilly. Not used since, it will need to be restarted and serviced before being driven again.
This world-renowned 328 GTS, which Peter Klasen describes as a "mobile, efficient, high-performance sculpture in which the most beautiful forms of industrial aesthetics meet those of contemporary art", has never been seen on the market before, and is now awaiting a new enthusiast in search of one of the finest works of motoring. This unique Art Car, which has been exhibited in museums, contemporary art galleries, at Le Mans Classic and at Chantilly Art & Elegance by Richard Mille, is being sold with its framed autographed lithograph, a book on the Mecanica exhibition in Paris in 2014, including its making of, and a book on its exhibition at the Posco Museum in Seoul, Korea.
