1932 Riley 9 Lynx - Prototype number 142

A well-maintained car that has proved its worth touring on the Continent- fitted with the desirable Brooklands Remote gear-change

The replacement for the Nine four seat tourer came in the form of the Lynx, which debuted at the 1932 Motor Show. Also available with a choice of two six-cylinder engines, the new Lynx was a most attractive motor car with sporting lines and a hood which, when folded, was concealed under a hinged panel, making for a very stylish and sleek appearance.

Today, the ‘disappearing hood’ Lynx is highly sought after, as the model was only produced for the 1933 season, as the Lynx was continued from late 1933 with slightly larger 4 door coachwork. As with many Rileys, Lynxes were popular with sporting motorists and a number saw action in rallies and reliability trials.

First registered in East Sussex in January 1933, this car is understood to have been one of three prototypes, so would have been built in 1932. (Prototype number 142 is written on the rear of the near side door trim).  There are a few differences from later models - the gearbox is the Silent Third type and is fitted with the desirable ‘Brooklands’ remote gearchange. The doors have a slightly different design also, being flat at the lower edge whereas later models featured a curve.

The car was acquired by the previous owner 22 years ago as an unfinished restoration. It was subsequently completed and in 2004 was taken on a Continental trip, winning the Riley Register Yallop Trophy. The trip was from Dover to Monaco via Beaune & Haute Provence, then on to Portofino, up and over to Lake Garda, over several passes into Switzerland. The trip was completed with no incidents and two years later the car was driven to Monaco again for the Historic GP.

In summary, a well proven car that should provide much enjoyment to the next custodian.  Included is an old style RF60 logbook dating back to 1953.
Around £4, 000 has spent on recent maintenance and upgrades and bills are included in the file of documentation supplied.
